VectisSaint Posted 17 May, 2009 Share Posted 17 May, 2009 At least one of our players ended the season with a win at Wembley. Another clean sheet as well. Wonder if he will stay with us next term or whether he will move to Torquay permanently. Well done Michael, we really could do worse than keep him as backup to Davis. Not convinced by Tommy or Bart I'm afraid.

He's at the age where goalkeepers are deemed to be at their peak and could command a decent contract at a number of Championship clubs. We can't afford to even offer him a contract at the moment and he'll get plenty of offers before we're in a position to do so.

SFC Forever Posted 17 May, 2009 Share Posted 17 May, 2009 He has always shown promise and could even force his way into pole position before the next season starts properly. Especially as I would think Kelvin is likely to move on. MP's experience this season will have done him the world of good.
saint63 Posted 17 May, 2009 Share Posted 17 May, 2009 Torquay, one league behind us now! Torquay now have a board of directors working together as a team and a Chief Executive, Colin Lee, who knows what he's doing, with a mixture of youth and experience in the team who work hard for each other. They have sorted themselves out in two seasons. We should look no further for a model for us to go by. Should the journey to Southampton not be needed next season, I am spoiled for choice for two local Devon teams on the up!!
Roo Posted 17 May, 2009 Share Posted 17 May, 2009 Just back from Wembley (spent most of my life in the Torquay area, so took the chance to see what success is like) and I thought Poke was excellent. Wasn't troubled too much in the way of shots but claimed everything that was there to be claimed, and I thought he was particularly calm which must have helped the back 4. Like Kelvin his kicking is a bit erratic, but on the whole I don't think he would let us down if he found himself in our goal next season. And yes, its just so weird that Torquay are only a league below us!
JibMcdo Posted 17 May, 2009 Share Posted 17 May, 2009 As a Torquay fan (my bro supports Saints so I take an interest), I would love Poke to stay with us but he was only playing today because Scotty Bevan, formerly of Southampton too, has a thigh strain. He celebrated like one of the lads though so maybe he wants to stay with us. Who knows?

Not that we meet that often, but after the enormous amount of coverage on " London clubs " and the more successful northern teams - it's good to see " more local teams " get a mention. It also creates more interest for derby games in the South / West Country.
saintjay77 Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 i dont think the idea is for him to stay down here in Torquizzle. He was loaned out because there was no chance of action ahead of Bart Tommy and KD but the idea has always been that he should be our future keeper. They even pulled him back not so long ago to tie him up on another deal before going back to Torbados. They only got in Beven because Poke got injured too and now they have 2 keepers who are capable of keeping the each other out of the team. Well dont Torquay and well done Poke. I hope we are not in the same league next season despite me being able to walk to a saints away match!

Not convinced by Tommy or Bart I'm afraid. YES well done MICHAEL POKE. OK - he's no longer a lad (23?) but has been at the club since he was 10, and gone through every age group, Academy, Reserves and First team. He's had some tough football down in the Conference but more real football than the other two " understudies "; " Bart " and Forecast. He's done enough to stay on our books, but with four keepers at least one should go, (as there are also Academy lads coming through). Michael should stay.
