  1. I thoroughly enjoyed that! I think we're going to see a lot more goals from Broja.
  2. We certainly haven't tapped much of our potential. It's surprising how large our fanbase is worldwide. Obviously, we are not one of the big 6 put we are close to the top of the rest. In terms of size of fanbase, we are one of the clubs you'd expect to be at least mid-table in the top flight. Leicester's fanbase was certainly smaller than ours before they started winning trophies and it's winning trophies which produces sizeable increases in the size of fanbases. • Premier League Facebook followers 2019 statistic | Statista Which Premier League Club has the most Twitter followers? - Football Kit News
  3. And all that money is sitting in Kat's Swiss bank account. Her bank balance was the only thing that was taken to the next level. She really took Gao to the cleaners.
  4. My first away game was at Crystal Palace in 1965 when Selhurst Park was one of the last grounds to have the new luxury of concrete terracing covering all sides. The top half of the away end was still just a grass bank which turned to mud when it rained. Before my time, a lot of grounds just used natural slopes because concrete terracing was too expensive, and so were roofs, which meant away ends were nearly always uncovered. This was Barcelona's Nou Camp: e8289a513d129cca256c0695a1b62e28.jpg (600×338) (pinimg.com) My first trip to Anfield wasn't until 1971, on a football special train. On the route to the ground, we walked through a narrow alleyway with high walls, and the local kids lobbed house bricks over the walls at us. When we got inside the ground, I started to sing OWTS. I'm quite tall and so stood out. Immediately 2 local coppers dived in, grabbed me and told me to "shut up." They only wanted to hear Liverpool fans sing. One of the other Saints fans I went up with went in the Kop because he wanted to experience it. He came back after the game quite excited by it all. (182) Liverpool FC - The Kop Crowd - YouTube
  5. "You're all f---ing racist c-nts" at the Hungarian players." The best Hungarian player was incidentally black. I was at Wembley the last time England played Hungary, in 2010. There were more Hungarian fans there then and no crowd problems whatsoever. Now, anybody from any Eastern European country and perhaps almost any European country gets their national anthem booed and is subjected to abuse at Wembley. I also heard f---ing Frogs and f---ing Krauts mentioned in a nearby conversation (if the word blacks had been used they'd have been arrested , it would have got massive news coverage and somebody would have ended up in jail). We are stirring up hostility with insincere virtue signalling whilst turning a blind eye to real hatred. The people who used to shout racist abuse have now just found different targets: foreigners, especially those from European countries. That is not respect.
  6. I was in the home end so the Hungarian fans were quite far away from me but apparently a steward heard one of them use a racist word - I don't know whether it was in Hungarian or English - then all hell broke lose as an army of stewards and police waded into the Hungarian fans, egged on by the home fans, who'd booed and jeered all the way through the Hungarian national anthem and were shouting various xenophobic comments at the Hungarian players. There was a drunk chap near me who, when he wasn't making paper aeroplanes to throw towards the pitch, spent the whole game shouting "You're all f---ing racist c-nts" at the Hungarian players. The xenophobia of the England fans at Wembley has got a lot worse lately. There seems to be total contempt for anybody foreign. Meanwhile, in the programme we had a feature telling us that we were celebrating Black History Month.
  7. Yes. Hojbjerg is by far the most successful of the four. Even though defensive midfielder is not an eyecatching position, he is incredibly popular with Spurs fans and there was even talk of him being their player of the year. "'He's a phenomenal player. Congratulations, Mr Levy." Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: Is midfielder Spurs' most influential signing? - BBC Sport
  8. At the age of 37 José Fonte scored in his 47th game for Portugal yesterday. He has kept himself remarkably fit. I think he'll make it to his 50th cap.
  9. I've been going to Saints games since 1963 and I consider myself a true football fan. For me, it's the top flight and you get to see the best players. Being in it brings prestige to the club you support, whereas being out of it, like Portsmouth are at the moment, can leave you feeling envious. Like many old fans, I'm a bit of a traditionalist and would prefer things to stay the same. I was happy enough with the old Division 1 but everything changes over time and we have to accept that. It's still the top tier of English football and that's where a club of our size belongs. Fans of clubs like Derby and Nottingham Forest, currently stuck in the 2nd tier, will be feeling the same way.
  10. Our best hope of winning another trophy is to win either the League Cup or the FA Cup and, in spite of 1976, we'll have a lot better chance of doing that if we stay in the Premier League. Another bonus is the occasional foray into Europe, and games with teams like Inter Milan willl always be highlights of a lifetime supporting Saints. As for winning the league, how many times did we ever win the Championship or the old Division 2? Our history shows, there is more chance of us being relegated from it than ever winning it. The best you can hope for in the Championship is to get promoted to the Premier League, which is what every team in it is aiming for and now that they've succeeded in doing so Brentford fans are living the Championship fans' dream. Fans of clubs still stuck down there are looking at them enviously.
  11. So true.
  12. Our U21s have deteriorated in the 4 years we've been in the EFL Trophy so it obviously isn't helping them at all. I don't see any players better prepared for the Premier League. As for 'who cares if they win', we all will if we get drawn against Portsmouth, which with so few teams in the southern section's group draw is inevitably going to happen. Developing a losing mentality, like developing a winning one, can become a habit. Players go out there half expecting to lose. Academy teams have always played their peers and it hasn't done them any harm in the past. If the coaches feel an U21 player is ready to face lower league first teams, and a lot of them clearly aren't, they can always give him a loan spell. That would be far better and more realistic preparation as the 1 or 2 U21s who might break into our first team one day will be surrounded by older players, not in a team of teenagers getting thrashed by a team of older men. That is not 'competitive football': it's just demoralising.
  13. I really wish we'd withdraw our U21s from the EFL Trophy. We've not got a cat in hell's chance of winning it, we do nothing for the tournament, the heavy defeats to lower league teams are demoralising for our players and fans alike and it's only a matter of time before we get drawn against Portsmouth and, like all lower league teams do, their first team will thrash our U21s and we'll never hear the end of it.
  14. At his peak, in 1963, he was one of the best players in the world: (155) 23/10/1963 ENGLAND v REST of the WORLD XI - YouTube Another one who's largely forgotten now, our Welsh international captain, Stuart Williams, was singled out for praise by Pele after the 1958 World Cup Finals.
  15. Peter Shilton Stuart Williams Virgil van Dijk José Fonte Luke Shaw Terry Paine Matt Le Tissier Alan Ball Mick Channon Alan Shearer Kevin Keegan Ist sub Sadio Mane. But, then there's Ron Davies and one we only saw as a young left back, Bale, who went on to become one of the best forwards in the world (It's hard to fit all of the great forwards we've had into one team)
  16. He's really struggling in League One. "He hasn’t managed to score a goal or provide an assist for Michael Appleton’s side so far this season, despite having seven appearances": Southampton: N’Lundulu struggling on loan | FootballFanCast.com
  17. Mike Dean looks like Homer Simpson in a tracksuit.
  18. Leicester fans' love affair with Vestergaard continues: "Dreadful." "Every game he's shit." "Absolute turd of a signing "
  19. Most successful clubs are, none more so than Man City and Chelsea. Bournemouth and Brighton's recent success has been a direct result of the money their owners have put in. Football clubs, like race horses, have always been rich men's play things. The idea that football clubs should be viewed as business investments is a relatively new one and it usually seems to result in unsuccessful football teams.
  20. They lost to a Burton team which hadn't won any of its previous 7 matches but Pompey hadn't won any of their previous 7 either. Their fans are starting to talk about relegation.
  21. Perraud reminds me of Jeremy Pied. He's OK as a squad player but he's never going to be in the same class as players like Walker-Peters and Livramento.
  22. You can't underestimate the importance of a striker of the calibre of Ings. He creates a lot of goals as well as scores them. His constant pressing and goal threat also mean the opposition have to keep men back. He has got 2 goals and 2 assists in the Premier League already this season. Without his goals and assists in the Premier League last season, we'd have been 16 points worse off. I'm pretty sure we would have won a game by now if he had still been here.
  23. I like Ralph. I don't want to see him sacked, I hope he turns things around and I still think we could win a cup with him in charge. But do we really have "one of the worst records in Premier League history" and is this our worst ever start to a Premier League season? Since crying after beating Liverpool in January 2021, Ralph Hasenhuttl's Southampton has one of the worst records in Premier League history including a 9-0 loss to Manchester United (talksport.com)
  24. The Jimenez goal was the only moment of real quality on the pitch. Pity it was against us. The highlight of the day off the pitch was the Saints Brass march along the touchline in front of the Kingland Stand. They really have got their OWTS off to perfection now. They fired up the atmosphere before kick-off and I think they deserve a spot in the Chapel End so they could stir it up a bit during the game as well.
  25. I wouldn't worry. If Leicester keep playing Vestergaard, we'll finish above them this season.
