Well yeah, only just realised that might have been interpreted by some as "he only won one match" - that was not the case at all (hence my stuff about seeing us slaughter Man City playing direct football).
-
Jonno Quick, and equally as adept at defending.
-
Already covered in depth, along with a debate about whether we only signed him to promote an u-21s match at St Mary's where Surman and Walcott were in the England squad.
-
Thirteen whole matches he got, and we won the last one of them. He made quite the impression on me considering his short tenure, but I guess that was when I was going a lot. I saw us win at Man City and Wolves, losing on Niemi Tribute Day at Charlton (when about 5 of the youth team got squad numbers due to half the squad being "injured" and Niemi didn't play - which with hindsight was symptomatic of the lack of support he had from the players) and then utterly rolling over at Villa on the opening day when Folly made his debut. I remember vociferously defending his "direct but not long ball" style as well, we murdered City at the City of Manchester Stadium with that, Pahars had a field day as the outlet on the wing, but people were getting properly narky about it.

Stuart Gray managed Villa in the Prem for two matches in Jan/Feb 2002. Wigley managed Bolton in the Prem for one match in 2009/10. Just saying.
-
I should imagine after his Saints experience that was his choice. He could have got a Championship job easily at the time, but chose to go back to the lower leagues managing Sheff Wed in League One.

The point being we can't (or probably shouldn't) replace them all at the same time, so we need to identify which ones it is most prudent to replace sooner rather than later. -
Sturrock's Saints record (which was basically win one, lose one) was significantly better than Redknapp's, and that's really all I have to say about it.
-
I think you got 4 "originals" there, pretty good going for post 253. Nilsson was one of our worst ever Prem players, Guthrie was decent in the sense that we were cack before and after him and he added a bit of pace to our passing and effort to the midfield (though he can't get in Reading's team now). Jelle Van Damme was with us from 2004-6, mostly injured, a ponderous donkey left back who refused to play in the Championship. Stephen Crainey played about 4 matches under Sturrock and got sold almost immediately, was decent for Blackpool last season though.

I have a REALLY vague recall of having some Chinese players on trial but they never played, and there's no mention of Saints (even for a trial) on his Wiki page. Weirdly Newport County also had a couple of Chinese players on trial about 7 or 8 years ago, wouldn't be surprised if it was the same ones. Aha ! : http://www.southampton-mad.co.uk/news/tmnw/chinese_skipper_on_trial_193866/index.shtml

Always nice to pop into this thread and find out what's really going on ! Today I have learned that Keith Harris is Chainrai's puppet. Oh the irony.

But somehow always get it wrong when we're flying up the leagues and winning the vast majority of matches. -

Pleased I just clicked on "View Post" for that one, anyway. The usual illogic. -

I readily accept I have done this. In fact the reason I flagged it up was because I'd just done it. I am aware you are not big on the use of Ignore as you think it's indicative of an inability to cope with that person's opinions, but I just get bored with having to read the same stuff from the same people. Shockingly, given the stadium capacity arguments, you're not on that list. . FWIW I have 7 people on ignore at the moment. 4 of them are single-joke trollers, one is endlessly confrontational and negative beyond all reason, and two just talk complete garbage all of the time and can't even put together coherent arguments to defend themselves. 6 of them I will never bother checking comments, one I will. -

Something else I've learned. Putting people on block because you're fed up of their trolling, negativity or deliberately antagonistic tone is fairly pointless, because either someone else quotes them or they comment on threads you're posting on and you wonder if they're replying to you. Also, I have learned that being a "try hard" is apparently some kind of insult. -
Anything over £5m for a second tier left back was serious money and we still did pretty well out of the deal given our precarious postion and the pittance he could have gone for if our financial state was more widely known, and as for "strong signs of going all the way to the top", tell that to the Spurs fans after his first 20 matches for them all ended without a win. Forecast was obviously an attempt at slashing the wage bill along with playing the kids, and he was bought with the lower leagues in mind, seeing that at some point he was good enough to get signed by Spurs. That he turned out to be even worse than League Anything was actually a fairly unexpected outcome.

Then they'd all be right too. -
Quite.
-
Maybe we can get Spurs to buy Forecast back for £30m as part of the deal as well.

Guly and Kelvin's deals both expire in 2014 if Transfermarkt is to be believed.
