Do you want Nathan Jones to Manage Southampton Football Club?
CB Fry replied to Rivers's topic in The Saints
If Gakpo was one if the two then what Behind Enemy Lines is saying is bullshit. Gakpo did not come here because of "penny pinching". He didn’t go to Leeds either. He didn’t go anywhere. -
Pretty sure that Sheehan, Cohen & Jones did my conveyancing a couple of years back.

Who is in charge tonight? Ruben Selles? Eriquo Negro more like.

I would add to the above that I had never heard of Hasenhuttl so when I googled him it was difficult to see where he had actually put a foot wrong. His record was actually superb, because it was only his sacking at RB that was a blemish but that seemed like a personality clash rather than failure. He probably had the best record of anyone we had ever recruited. Compared to Koeman which was streaky/patchy when he arrived and continued to be so after us. -

I think our experience with Pellegrino and Poortvliet has taken the sheen off "foreigners good, British bad". If we took the manager of middling Serie B (##googles##) Cagliari and his biggest job was a disastrous time at (###I know this one, Paul Rideout###) Bari in Serie B then I think a lot of talk would still be sceptical and unconvinced. -
I like that it only took about six posts before the Eric Black hate started

Can someone get enough red cards made on time? -
2/10. Transparent. Needs more finesse.

Fine. I think in that case lets be clear that this is considered decision, this is the guy Sports Republic really want. Its not about constraints or budget, this is an active choice they are making that this is definitely the guy. Personally watching a middling Championship team playing over and over again doesn't really tell you much about what this guy will be like in nationally broadcast press conferences, or attracting new players, or dealing with multi millionaires who expect to be primed to join Champions League clubs in two years time. If the only thing SR are looking at is whether they like his diamond formation or not, then we're fucked. -

Four years ago, with a poor squad and in our exact current position, we appointed a man who had recently finished second in the Bundesliga and had Champions League experience, and we were paying him six million a year. -
Sherbourne can qualify for the Champions League 50 seasons in a row and it won't make more money than we do if we stay in the Premier League. SR have already said that we are the top club in the group and will be for the foreseeable. Look, we can't afford a striker and we're about to appoint a nobody manager from Luton. This is not a group on the brink of a billion dollar takeover of Atletico Madrid.

If he gets us relegated (which on the balance of probabilities is the most likely outcome) then I think it highly unlikely that the fan base will accept him staying on because he's managed in the Championship before. I am sure this poll will show collectively he is not our choice so if he fails that will be it. He'll be gone. -
9/10 transfer window it was. 9/10.
-
I've heard that they are a bigger club than we are.
-
Lawrie McMenemy was 0-2 once and everyone wrote him off but he turned it round and won the game.
-
I've not seen anyone, anywhere say they want Gerrard but you be you.
-
They put "all of their professional resources" into deciding to not buy a striker during the summer transfer window. A decision a lot of people said was crazy and those people are right. I'm not sure when the club leadership became infallible because I don't see it.

The same Gordon Strachan who had five years previously managing in the top flight and finishing above us most years? That one? Jones has got that Premier League experience has he? Its disappointing that we are employing a manager with such a weak pedigree that the only "positive" response people on this forum have is the classic "if everyone is writing him off then that means he'll definitely be brilliant and prove you wrong" argument. No one needed that bloody argument when Hasenhuttl was appointed because he'd recently finished 2nd in the Bundesliga.

I don't know about everyone else but it feels good to leave the bad old days behind. I mean, in the bad old days, under the penny-pinching, soul destroying Gao era, the only manger he appointed was a hugely experienced guy from the German top division with experience at Champions League level as well as experience lower down. Now, under Sport Republic, in our bold, exciting, dynamic new dawn we are recruiting someone who, er, has some experience of working in Luton and losing 17 games in 38 at Stoke. When Gao got Ralph in the door the fan base was enthused and excited, it felt like a genuine new dawn. And that was because Ralph had obvious pedigree. Put it this way - people on this forum back then did not spend the day of the announcement trotting out shit comparisons and fairy stories to desperately make out this really is a great appointment honest it is. No one had to do that because we'd recruited a guy who had recently finished Second in the fucking Bundesliga. It was all there. I now believe Sport Republic actually do want us to be smaller than Göztepe. Strap in.

Its interesting to read this an other write ups on Jones. There seems to be a belief amongst some on here that Jones is some hipster exciting manager but everything I am seeing suggests he us as old school cloggy as they come. There's people on here raving and getting excited about Jones because "at least he's not Sean Dyche". But from what I can see, he is Sean Dyche. That's exactly what he is.
-
As soon as the news came through I thought to myself that this is the kind of appointment made by a club where money is no object.

Some of these hot takes are absolutely appalling. Adkins was hired as a man with two League One promotions under his belt. We hired the best guy we could get to get us promoted. The Nathan Jones equivalent in that scenario would be someone who got to the L2 play offs with Torquay or something the previous year. And when Adkins was sacked he was higher up the table than Ralph is now. Was still a shame to get rid of him regardless of what came next. Honestly this stuff is pitiful.
