I don’t think he has. He might have given them a pen, but he’d definitely have got himself in front of the ball…

The ‘hit’ wasn’t the issue though, it was the way he ‘ushered’ the striker toward goal without the slightest of challenges. Maybe he was worried about a pen on contact, but still, a good defender has to be able to position their body without fouling the attacker. I thought it was diabolical (and if Stephens had done it this place would be lit up!). I can forgive the odd stray pass - there was a couple - but he was also at fault for their ‘equaliser’ too, losing the striker. Thankfully we got away with that one. Against all of that, he’s young and still learning, and he’s clearly got potential, I just don’t see him as an automatic starter atm.

Never a priority. The biggest issue was not buying a guaranteed goal scoring striker.

Yeah, that is a bit dubious, as you’re referring to specific mechanical fault - which is a lot easier to predict than the capabilities or otherwise of a human being (not to mention a million different factors that could impact the outcome of a match). Let’s just call it what it was… a big stick to beat a player (who tends to get more grief than most), who *wasn’t even playing*. I just find it odd.

I’d say that’s more of a fact. What I was challenging was an ‘imagined result’ featuring a player who didn’t actually play… [For the record, I think if Baz had played that gaff would never have happened, we’d have drawn 1-1 and won on pens 😉]

What have we learned? Both goalies are imperfect. Jelert has to start (why hasn’t he been?) All three CBs tonight were better than our two ‘first choices’ Jander looks decent (let’s hope his injury isn’t bad) Downs is sadly way out of his depth. We haven’t sorted out striking problems, but it’s now a choice from two.
