Stanley, in regards to survival of the fittest etc - if that is your area of interest - I would forward an argument that says humanity has reached a point where we sort of transcend the traditional formats of selection and so on - manifestations of our culture do, in thie globalised, media saturated world, supercede fundamental concepts of what 'fittest' means. The species is no longer fighting to survive, as a whole, and our selections and so on have reflected this.
