That's my point about having money burning a hole in your pocket. You don't necessarily spend it because you have it, you wait for value or real necessity. No wonder so many people (and footie clubs) are in the financial ****.

I'm disappointed too, but let me put to you a related scenario. You have ten quid in your pocket. "Hurrah", you say, "I do have some money, so let's spend it". You wander down this new bar, full of posh totty you couldn't afford, where it buys you one drink. You could have walked a bit further and had a full evening in another better value bar. But it's not just that. You spend your money and then remember that the leccy bill is due at the end of the week and you haven't budgeted for it. Your East End and Leicester mates just say sod the leccy board, my mate in Portsmouth never pays his bill...

I live in the area that contains Cervinia and would say it's the best bet for that time of year from all my local resorts, although I've skied at a number of others locally depending on the snow during a particular season. April can be quite warm but at the altitude you're talking about it doesn't pay to take the mountain casually/ ASIS is right about layering, which can mean getting stuff you can use in other circumstances: a bitterly cold night watching Saints at Middlesborough or the like. TKMaxx is a good call, and I've bought decent stuff at Lidl and Aldi (goggles,gloves, sunnies, jacket). Decent proper ski socks are a must. Take some lessons or you'll be floundering. Before I ever went skiing (many years ago) I did a dry ski slope course which saved me learning the basics at resort prices and meant I joined people who'd already been a week, and thus had much more fun. Be careful: it's addictive. I now live in the mountains [and have a season pass for the whole area], not co-incidentally because I'm a skier!

I've only been once and that was for the testimonial for alan Knight (IIRC). Great experience: lumps of concrete chucked over the wall and kept in for ages. AK, bless 'im, was deeply embarassed and came over personally to thank us.

In other football related news super{as in age not ability}-veteran suewhistle is going to our 5th pre-season training session of the week this afternoon. Yes, I always felt a bit sorry for him. But yesterday was delightful, and to think we were able to bring on De Ridder and Schneiderlin. Barnsley were poor, but Leeds were one of those teams that people thought could be up there and even if they end up only a mid-table side it was a reasonable test. We'll see with the Ipswichs and WHU of this league, but now I feel we can beat anyone even if we'll obviously lose a few, and playing decent football to do it.
