Why didn't Crouch save us from administration?
um pahars replied to Nineteen Canteen's topic in The Saints
Maybe you need to start a new thread along the lines of: "Add your name here if you think/thought we would still be in the relegation zone had Pearson been kept on (even if he had the same parameters to operate in)????". Would you sign up??? Our fate was sealed the minute this experiment failed to produce the results some beleved it would. Even a modicum of success and/or a spirit of unity could have enabled us to slowly trade ourselves out of our tough predicament. Success on the pitch drives a football club, and as wehave seen failure also decimates it. Lowe and Wilde did not return to preside over a funeral, they realised we were salvageable. It was always going to be a tough ask, but one that was made all the more harder by some crass decisions that began last summer and just continued throughout this dire season. The changes instigated by Lowe and Co. last summer have simply failed. -

Have to agree and disagree Phil. I agree that we really have to try and move on and look to the future and IMHO the future would be brighter without anyone tainted from recent history. I still have no idea why Crouch and Richards are being wheeled out, but at the same time am grateful for their £50k and ?k respectively. Is there a belief that no one else is capable or willing to do the work?? What work are they doing?? What is the alternative?? Is it due to the administrator trying to be at arms length from the football club?? And the part I disagree with is if the case is we are soon to be beggars then we may not be able to do much choosing. I said quite a while back that if the alternative was Lowe or the Wessex Premier, then I would take his money. -

I think you're about 6/7 months out!!!!!!! Our fate was sealed the moment we dumped Pearson and went for the madness that was Jan Poortvliet. IMHO that appoinment had the single biggest impact on results on the pitch, attendances at SMS and £££££'s in the bank. This Club was salvageable, make no mistake about that (Lowe and Wilde did not come back to preside over a funeral), but to salvage it would need a modicum of success on the pitch, something that Poortvliet failed to deliver and/or a spirit of togetherness off of it, something that Lowe/Wilde found it impossible to achieve. We were in a very delicate position, but administring a dose of Poortvliet with Lowe as Chief Nurse is not the best treatment when you're in ICU. Quite simply, it was a misatke for him to come back last summer. -
The very fact he thought he had to justify his position coupled with the fact he thinks he should take no part of the blame for the situation we find ourselves in says it all really. PS Matty apparently has an autbiography out later tis year and he made reference that Lowe might not like what it says in there!!!!!!! Hopefully we will be reading it on an away day to either Burnley or Leeds, and not Hamworthy!!!!!

I'll say two things. 1. You missed out all his other trolling names LOL:D 2. Are you really suggesting he/she/it thinks :smt119:rolleyes::smt119 -
Like I said, everything has been said and done on here (although I'm sure I'll keep posting) and I fear for our future.

But you would have thought there would have been enough time to sort something out between September and April, particularly with the January Window sitting right in the middle. I'm not saying it would be easy, as I'm sure it would be a really difficult task, with some very tough and unpopular decisions, it's just it doesn't look as though we read Barclay's intentions/threats correctly as I didn't see much activity in the January window or elsewhere regarding other assets or ways of bringing money in.

Which is why we should have done anything and everything to avoid administration and to keep on the good side of Barclay's, no matter how crppily they acted. I can't help but think that as tough as it might have been, there should have been a way of managing the £1m reduction in our overdraft as indicated by Barclay's back in Spetember of last year. IMHO on and off the pitch, this season has been poorly executed.

I don't think too many would have any problem of living within our means (although I think many took exception to someone claiming we wanted to do a Leeds or we wanted to sign Henry, which was Lowe at his best in succinctly missing the point). But the point in hand is just like this season with a finite (nad perhaps limited) budget, we made the wrong decisions about what, who and where to spend the little money we had. I'm sure Lowe never intended for it all to go tts up and I'm sure he thought he had the clubs best interests at heart, but just like this season, that final season or two under Lowe last time around was all about poor execution of a poor strategy. As for where would the money come from, well the suggestion many on here have already said is what money we had should have been spent in a much more wiser manner. Our transfer & wage policy back then seems comparable to the scattergun approach we adopted last summer where we went for quantity over quality. I remember going through the amounts of monies spent on transfer in in those years and you would be amazed at how much we spent. Money spent by a succession of managers all buying their own players to play their own style, only for the managerial merry go round to put everything back to square one. We ended up with a bloated squad of mediocrity, which cost quite a bit to compile (along with wages and other costs) instead of a much more targeted and focussed squad. Although the numbers probably had 1 digit less last summer, it doesn't escape my notice that there were so many similarities between last summer and it's disastrous effects on the Club and the end of Lowe's tenure first time around.

And potentially a very good thought as well. Like you, I'm not sure of the mechanics, cost and many other factors, but if 10,000 season tickets could be sold PDQ, then that would be close to £4m sat in a bank somehwere which might interest people. P.S. As for cost, administering, legal issues etc, then surely it could be possible to call on the goodwill of some legal eagles, accountants and maybe even bankers (and banks) who could possible do it for free (or at least a reduced cost basis).

It was probably mentioned before you rocked up in mid January;) HTH
