I've always thought that Gove was a sandwich short of a picnic - this confirms it.

Great stuff! And next week they're dramatising Bird Song (by Sebastian Faulkes). One of the better books I've read. Thank heavens for the BBC.
-
Excellent programme - I've loved every episode. And tonight it's preceded by the dramatisation of the book about midwives in the East End of London in the 1950s. I loved the book so I'm really looking forward to the drama.

I sort of agree with you there Jill but.......... If these (men and) women chose to have these implants for purely cosmetic reasons, then the NHS can't be expected to pick up the tab because some of them might go wrong. A leading plastic surgeon was on TV this morning saying that there was, indeed, little risk of things going wrong. The NHS is taking ethical responsibility to remove and replace implants where it carried out the original procedure and that's right. It has also said it will REMOVE implants carried out by private clinics but will not replace them. The private clinics should take the same moral and ethical stance as the NHS at their own expense. After all, they make a f***ing fortune from doing all these procedures on people. The eventual outcome will be that there will be a huge clampdown on cosmetic procedures and that can only be a good thing. As someone pointed out earlier, the private clinics / surgeons will have extensive PII.

FWIW I think the NHS is absolutely right to remove and replace implants where it has been done by the NHS consequential to breast removal for cancer. But I think the private customer should have the right to demand replacement under the Sale of Goods Act. I think some clinics have said they'll remove the implants FOC but that the private patient should pay for replacement implants if that's what they want. I don't understand why women pay for this surgery in the first place so I guess I'm not all that sympathetic to those who've undertaken purely cosmetic surgery. Clinical neccessity is an altogether different matter. But do bear in mind that some men have breast surgery too.

But I have to give a plug to this band: http://www.deadwax.co.uk/

Another band I used to like was Man. I've just wiki'd them and found links to a number of other bands I used to like, back in the day, such as Hawkwind, Soft Machine and Brinsley Schwarz.

Ian Anderson used to live near me - is he one of your buddies?

And a close second would be Creedence Clearwater Revival followed by Curved Air

Well they haven't published my post, sent 15 minutes ago! No clue in my 'user name' to suggest I'm an SFC supporter. But it's obviously a female name, so maybe they think my question isn't worth anything.

We already have this facility, don't we? I remember trying to read Chaucer in the original text and having to rely on a 'translation' and even old headstones and memorial stones in churches are almost indecipherable because of 'f' for 's' etc. I love my language and I love delving into the roots of words. I'm happy to txt when appropriate but I'd hate our quirky spellings to change.

And I'll be PAWN - oh sorry, I meant PRAWN
-
I don't know - you'd know more than me. On the one hand, I can see that the creation (allegedly) of 40,000 jobs is good but on the other hand there are so many far more important ways to spend this money. As I say, I'm undecided.

At the moment it takes about 45 minutes to get to London from, say, High Wycombe. If this is built, it will take the same time to get to London from Birmingham. Surely one effect will be that a lot of people who find the cost of housing very high in Buckinghamshire will move closer to Birmingham. I'm not sure whether that will mean house prices will rise in Birmingham though. I'm undecided on this project.

Health workers reject government's final offer on pensions
bridge too far replied to trousers's topic in The Lounge
When we read about the HUGE pension pots the top executives at these large companies get, their bonuses and their enormous wages, it's no wonder the workers in those companies (without whom the companies couldn't manufacture and sell) ask why they have to lose their comparitively meagre pensions or why they don't get one at all. -

Malicious web site according to my Norton AV -
And, to add to Trousers' analogy, SLH at one time had other businesses. But at the time of SLH's administration it had only one business - SFC.

Health workers reject government's final offer on pensions

This. Also, the health workers' scheme is 'closed' to new members in that all new members' pensions are calculated on average salary and not final salary. Unilever workers are striking too because, in spite of earlier promises, Unilever is closing its final salary scheme to existing members. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16455939
