Council crack down on English Speaking taxi stickers

Utter bosh! I'd be offended if people made judgements about me because of the colour of my skin or my nationality. -

Racism is racism - it doesn't apply to just one race. -

That's also a different argument. If a cabbie put up a sign saying 'French / German / Spanish spoken', would you consider that racist? No you wouldn't because that driver was offering a service that wouldn't normally be expected. Exactly the same as the situation you're suggesting. It would be the same if I went to, say, Greece and a cab had a notice saying 'English spoken'. I might be more inclined to use that cab. I wouldn't expect to see a sign saying 'Greek spoken' because I would assume that to be the case. So the signs are saying, by implication, that some Southampton cab drivers don't speak English. That IS racist IMO. -
Plenty of sharks at FP from all accounts

You could do all this in Poopey - for a fraction of the cost. HTH

'Big' business isn't renowned for its morality and decency. The little guy always suffers whilst the big boys carry on regardless

We'll be holidaying in the UK again I think. Maybe Snowdonia and with the children and grandchildren. We had a great week in Dorset last year with them all. But Mr TF and I will also have a week on our own somewhere - in the UK - but we haven't decided where. Somewhere with lots of local interest. Alternatively we might consider a rail trip to somewhere in Europe. Just seen your post Mike - so this will be of absolutely no interest to you whatsoever

It's good for keeping in touch and, for example, sharing photos of friends who live overseas. But I really get fed up with some contacts who feel they have to post how they're feeling about stuff every five minutes. I've hidden them - they bore me.

Thanks for that interesting info WSS. I was only quoting the council spokesman. However, I guess if you have to prove your 'knowledge', you have to be able to understand and answer in English when you are tested :smt102 -

According to the council spokesman interviewed on the local news earlier, all drivers have to be able to speak English before they're granted a licence. So what's the point in having a sign in the cab window? -
We all ought to fill in the form on this webpage and send it off to this department They'd have to look at PFC if they got enough complaints!

Did you mean to say 'down' in the title? -
Whose responsibility is it to police the financial (ir)regularities of privately owned companies? Why aren't they doing so?

Damn! Got my Davids muddled Just caught up on 'Mo' - I thought it was compelling viewing and it reminded me of what a great woman she was. I thought Julie Walters' portrayal was excellent. An ex of mine was assigned to her from the Diplomatic Protection Group and he said she really was a great person to know.

This was on BBC South news at lunchtime too.

I did hear earlier on 5 Live that, as long as the paperwork was in before the 5pm deadline, transfers could be concluded after the deadline.

We thought about this when we had our kitchen done at the end of last year because we were losing a radiator so that we could have more units. In the end we went with a plinth heater, our reasoning being that the kitchen is usually quite warm (from cooking) but is cold first thing in the morning. The plinth heater does the trick very well. It only cost £60 to buy and I imagine the running costs are negligible.

I don't think judges take emotion into account when judging. I think it's more likely to be an interpretation of the law that's proving difficult. Or - as someone said earlier - the judge is waiting for an appeal.

I'm thanking the BBC for a new, wonderful programme hosted by David Attenborough on the Seven Ages of Britain. I think we're so lucky to have such amazing programmes made for us

Switches on uber pedantic mode: And, of course, it should be 'shall I get .....'. 'Can' implies ability, 'shall' implies willingness. Switches mode off again
