  1. Very good point, Pancake!
  2. I absolutely agree with you on that bit. I think MPs should not have second jobs, including directorships on corporate boards. I believe MPs should be entitled to a second homes allowance when they live a long way from London. This is for two reasons: Firstly, they do have two jobs; firstly as a representative of their consituency (where they hold surgeries to deal with their consituents' issues) and secondly as a Member of Parliament. To deny them this second homes allowance would result in a distortion of the membership of the House as the only people who would be able to afford to be MPs would be the weatlhy. If we think really clearly about this issue we can see that many MPs represent constituencies far removed from their family homes. Most decide to move house (albeit potentially only for 4 / 5 years but that's a risk they understand). If they have families, they would probably prefer their children to go to school outside London. Also, given that the House often sits until 2 or 3 in the morning, it would actually be impracticable to go 'home' (to their consituencies) every night and be back in the morning for committees and other parliamentary work before the House sits. If I have to do two days' work with a client in, say, Manchester, it's cheaper for me to stay in Manchester than to hack up and down the M6 for two days.
  3. I want to cry
  4. Interesting that accounts haven't been filed since October 2007
  5. Surely they're just shareholders and therefore not entitled to any say in any deal?
  6. I think he's paid back something. I don't believe an MP's personal wealth should have any sway in the argument.
  7. Are you Scottish?
  8. To continue my analogy, I might have way more than the extra £20K but I wouldn't let the seller know that, now would I? People who make money, make money because they play a cute game.
  9. But surely, Mike, any new owner will offer as little as s/he feels s/he can get away with. The smaller the amount paid to buy the club, the greater the amount remaining to develop the club. Just because a small amount is being offered doesn't automatically mean there's no more left for development of the club. If I can buy a house for £20K less than the asking price, that gives me £20K to replace the kitchen and bathroom.
  10. Well I can't state this as a fact, but any council, regardless of political hue, would alienate a lot of people if it allowed the city's football ground to be developed. However, if, as part of a redevelopment proposal, an alternative ground was provided by the developer, the council might possibly give the idea more than a passing glance I suppose. This is me blue-sky thinking BTW
  11. But the Council is the body that has to grant planning permission for change of use. Remediation arguments aside, if the Council decides that the land can't be used for housing that's it - it can't. OK the developer could appeal to a higher body (a government department) but I think that appeal would fail.
  12. Gas works contamination is a big problem actually. Many years ago I negotiated with the local gas company to lease their redundant land for temporary hospital car parking. The deal fell through because the hospital would have had to pay a fortune to remediate the land - all to do with run off and aquifers (sp?) caused by covering the land. So I reckon it would be even more difficult for a residential development or even an industrial / commercial one.
  13. Adams Park would be fine for me. Interestingly, Wasps paid for the pitch at Adams Park to be relaid with a bed that ensured that the pitch would be suitable for both rugby and football.
  14. Aah my bad - I thought it was about the right level for this forum.
  15. Your point being?

  19. Serious, professional investors / business people would not engage in Chinese Whispers. They'd play their cards very close to their chests as they wouldn't want 'rivals' to know the nature of their bids. I won't believe anything I read on here until / unless it actually happens and is announced officially.
  20. So, if we are to believe the reports that W H Ireland is experiencing some difficulties, how do you suppose he decided his priorities? It must have been so hard for him to be in two places at once poor chap.
  21. Phew I bet he's glad he didn't opt for Performance Related Pay!
  22. That's very true Ponty. However, if I was as 'gifted' as RL and I loved my club as much as he claimed to, I would have done the job for free. I wonder if he'll get a pension out of all this too?
  23. I wonder what he gets paid for chairing the under-performing (allegedly) W H Ireland? I think I'll start under-performing in my job - I might earn a lot more that way
  24. That's obscene IMO
