Brighton 1-1 Saints - Match Thread
OnceaSaintalwaysaSaint replied to Pamplemousse's topic in The Saints
I don't mind Ralph's two 9-0s and our record defeat record because there was always the likelihood that a game or two later, Ralph would turn it around and we'd play better/different and win. The lowest ever points tally tells another story. It tells a story of incompetence, not learning from mistakes and apathy. And if/when we get relegated, I don't expect RM to get lucky twice and get us promoted again. We've got a squad good enough to stay up, but many of the better players will disappear. The only slight hope is that we scored twice last Sunday by going forward with purpose, so come on team, ignore RM's instructions and play your own game! -

Their first was a complete nonsense. You'd think at some point the instinct of one of the players would kick in and they'd ignore what RM preaches and just boot the ball upfield. The way the players have been told to play lost us the game today just as it did at Newcastle, Brentford, Wolves... And unless ABK has lost a leg, there's no way he is worse than Stephens. -

Normally think crap weather is a leveller but that's when the teams are a little mismatched. The gulf between us and them is so mismatched that the weather won't make much difference. They'll win 2/0 or 3/0. -
Exactly. Now 4. Wins breed confidence but our clowns in management don't seem to understand. Squeeze a win against Everton and we could have got going. Wolves were crap but our style of play let them in. Now they'll go on a run

Sadly, there's many of us that agree with your sentiment. I guess most people are little compared to Tall Paul, but Archer is extremely fast. I can see Onachu challenging for a ball, getting a head/shoulder/back on to it with Archer being the first to the ricochet. In fact, I can see that being a route to goal more than any of our other ways we've tried this year. -

ok, pass it 100 times up to the tall guy....... -
Some of the summer signings were good, but this must go in the crap pile. Totally one footed (more so than Che); liked his antics at Newcastle but soon realised that was a disguise for his crapness, and while some were saying for £7m he was worth a punt, I don't want to see him in a Saints shirt again.
-
Really like this guy. Some are comparing him with Alcaraz. Alcaraz could shoot but doesn't have Mateus' skill and Mateus sees a pass. Hoping he'll now he be the main attacking midfield option but, I agree, we'll lose him at the end of the season if we don't don't things around.

Without Ramsdale and now Bednerek, our defence is starting to look as strong as our attack! I'm guessing Jack will play alongside THB, so just when THB was finding his feet in the premier league, he'll be all over the place again. Still would like to see Onachu start with Archer. Admittedly, it's not Batman and Robin but hoof it up to the tall guy and watch him lay off to the speedster and RM might just realise there's potential for a partnership there. -
Really like the visuals but don't agree with any of the three points. There must be performance caveats in the contract, I reckon the majority want to see the back of him and personally, I don't believe our squad is that much worse than quite a few teams in the league.
-
A few years ago, we used to sing the anthem: Sali....Salisu...Sali...Salisuuu. Used to hate it because you could tell he was a journeyman. But I reckon I'll enjoy singing Danny....Danny Rohl....Danny...Danny Rohl... a lot more 😉
-
So now what do SR do? Are you suggesting SR concentrate of the structure of the club and they invest in a new Director of Football & Technical Director and leave the manager in situ? Problem is, I can't see that happening and I reckon SR are just weighing up 3 options with Russ M: 1) Leave him in for the next few weeks and see how it goes and when we inevitably lose these games, get rid of RM. 2) Hold out for as long as possible and panic fire him around beginning of February. 3) Keep with him even when we're relegated. THey'll probably completely arse this up too and settle with Option 2 😏
-
Does anyone else think his haircut makes him look like Adam Armstrong? Both equally clueless.
-
The problem is, as I understand it, the gang of three (Dragan, Ankersen, Kraft) are inextricably linked. So while there might be agreement that Ankersen has made a complete pig's ear of our club, I can't see Dragan getting rid of him without Dragan going himself. So, they need to be persuaded that this obsession with RM is totally wrong. Problem is, I'm sure they've already made approaches to other managers and they've said no. So do we go for some unknown manager or stick with what we've got? I think we go for some unknown manager. It really has got that bad!
-
The problem with all this comparison with Derby is that they were last in the premier league in 2007. 17 years ago. With our main players being sold off on relegation, there's a very real threat that we will float between the Championship and League 1 for a long time to come. And I don't think RM will get up promoted next year either. He has to go, and like someone said, he expects to go, so put him out of his misery.
-
And has anyone else noticed that ever since Pep told everyone how much he admired Southampton FC and learned from RM, Man City have lost four on the bounce? 😀
-
What doesn't RM get? Apparently he is frustrated that we "completely dominated the ball" but didn't win. Will he ever realise that it's goals that win matches. I'll tell you who is frustrated. I'm frustrated and I bet there's thousands of other Saints fans that are also frustrated that he's still serving up this style of football week in week out.
-
It may be too late but there are some seriously shitty teams at the bottom of the league. Wolves were awful today. There is still an outside chance we can sing that Great Escape music again but it won't be with RM at the helm. Staying in the premier league is worth at least £100m. I have zero confidence that SR are capable of finding a Poch or a Ralph but surely they realise they have to do something.
-
On another note, every time TP comes on for his minor cameo, he seems to get stuck in. At the end of the game today our best chance came when Ramsdale said 'fuck it' and hoofed it up to TP who challenged for the ball and it bounced off his back almost in to the path of BBD. He also got his head to a corner. OK, him and Archer up front aren't going to set the world alight but I really think they are our best option up front. AA once again proved he's not good enough.
-
It was very much buy a lot of stuff and hope some of it is good. I would suggest Ramsdale and Fernandes have worked out well. Archer has the making of being a star and Sugawara is also pretty good. Add the purchases of England call-up THB and Downes and that's over half the team. Hoping Wolves will feel obliged to come at us and leave gaps at the back. Just concerned we won't be quick enough to exploit those gaps, though am taking a megaphone to encourage the players forward and drown out RM's 'slow down' remonstrations 😉
-
+ THB makes four. We've got the potential for a good team and when Mr Ramsdale makes saves like he did on Saturday, we've still got a chance of staying up. He was brilliant on Saturday. One of the best goalkeeping displays I've seen from a saints keeper.
-
Thanks Midfield-General. Remember being near the half way line that day and we were all convinced there must have been a foul somewhere. Only afterwards, did we realise how bad that miss was. Truly mind-numbing. In fact, it was season defining. We were doing relatively well up to that game and then it all fell apart. Anyway, going this Saturday and looking forward to it. Difficult to get an away atmosphere going at the ground because we're all in a line but there's not going to be a better chance to beat this lot.

Adam Armstrong - Official: Loaned to WBA
OnceaSaintalwaysaSaint replied to Harry_SFC's topic in The Saints
And I wouldn't put BBD ahead of him either...but we do have Sam AA and Tall Paul and I would like to see them (especially TP) given more opportunity. -
The Man City game typified our approach to Tall Paul. Minutes to go, he's just come on and we win a free kick 20 yards outside their penalty area. Do we (a) Lump it in to TP to see if he can get on the end of it because that's why he's been brought on, or (b) Pass sideways and eventually back to our goalkeeper? Of course, we chose Option B! Play him with Archer because playing Archer with Adam A is playing two players with similar styles (except Archer is miles better).

Fulham/Brentford tonight. Inconsequential to us and only half watching but it's noticeable how both teams hardly ever pass backwards. There's a lot of shots from outside the box and hopeful crosses in to the middle but everything is quick with positive intent. These are middle of the table teams. Nothing special and the players certainly don't look any more skillful than ours. RM needs to watch other teams.
