  1. Only on Portsea Island could dear old Avram become an "iconic figure" (as the News puts it). Not only did he get the Skates relegated, he would have done so without any nine-point penalty. In fact, they'd have finished bottom even if the nine points had been given back. And yet, because he came out with a load of guff about bestest fans and spirit, Grant is seen as a hero by the few. You really couldn't make it up.
  2. Happy birthday Whitey! Glad to hear your recovery's going well, keep your pecker up and all that...
  3. Hiroshima Day. How very appropriate. Me, I'll go for the 10th August, which will make it a very special day which I'll remember for the rest of my life. Oh yeah, almost forgot - I'm getting married on the 10th August too...
  4. I'd say your interpretation is right. When Pompey were in the Premier League, prior to going into administration, the PL used TV money to pay clubs they owed money to before Pompey got a penny, so the PL's priority is clearly football creditors. They did advance PPs to Pompey that season, but I always thought that was more to prevent damage to their precious image than anything else.
  5. Probably because he knew that former employees owed money would get a tiny amount under any CVA (as will be the case if the proposed one should go ahead) whereas, as a football creditor, he would be paid every penny. Put another way, he was staking his claim in the event that the club is not liquidated. And I don't think the whole thing has much, if anything, to do with the FA; it's the leagues that deal with clubs.
  6. Looks like it's vanished already...
  7. My thoughts exactly - mind you, if we're right then he's being mighty optimistic. Can he really think he'll be joining Pompey next week!?
  8. If you like the Art Nouveau style, visit the Horta museum (basically Horta's own house, preserved for posterity). There's plenty of good places to eat in and around Grand Place - try a waterzoooi (I think that's how it's spelt).
  9. We're in the Premier League and this is the 21st century. Our songs should reflect the era and our status. At the same time, it makes sense to stick with tunes (if I might call them that) which we all know and love, so perhaps adaptations of old favourites would work. Here are some suggestions: Stand up, if you love Chablis We eat scampi and we eat scampi, We eat scampi and we eat scampi, We eat scampi and we eat scampi, We are the scampi eaters. Maybe we could sing "Who ate all the vol-au-vents?" at large opposition players, fans or whatever. Or just at Big Fat Sam.
  10. All the best mate - and thanks to Gemmel for the original post too.
  11. They haven't signed anyone; all the puff pieces in the News are about them wanting to sign players, with the obligatory whinges about the fact that they can't actually do so. The Football League isn't putting any pressure on players to write off any sums of money as far as I know. Plenty of people are doing just that, but not the FL.
  12. I thought it was Fraud and Desperado - maybe I misheard.
  13. Not quite - it will be more like this:
  14. I remember loving that kit when it first came out - it coincided with the signing of Keegan, and didn't get a sponsor's name for a while. I liked the away version even more and I still think they look great. That said, I was 20 in 1980; I think that in general, the younger you are, the more receptive you are to new things. I don't remember too many reactions from those older than me at that time. I'm not overly enamoured of this season's kit at first glance, but when it all comes down to dust it's a football kit which we'll wear for one season, and the last one from the current manufacturer. I'd say it looks a lot better than a couple I can think of (and which are glimpsed in the video on Saints Player).
  15. And how eminently suitable - a cheap, tacky liquidiser from the Tesco Value range. Perfect.
  16. Now that I like - just needs the toast to be royal blue, with a star and crescent moon in yellow on each slice...
  17. I'd have thought the difference is pretty clear. Rangers have been liquidated, but have nonetheless attempted to retain their SPL place. Other SPL clubs are being given a vote on whether this happens or not. Unless I've missed something, Pompey have not been liquidated. If they are I would expect them to be kicked out of the Football League, with no vote as to whether they get to stay in it or not. This, after all, is what has happened in previous cases of liquidation. Rangers, because of their dominant position in Scottish football, have actually been given massively preferential treatment by the SPL. Do you think they'd have done that for any club other than one of the Old Firm?
  18. If Chainrai were a football creditor he'd be due money from parachute payments. He's not though, so he won't be.
  19. PKF, like most large accountancy firms, solicitors etc, is a limited liability partnership. They don't have shareholders but are wholly owned by their partners. If the partnership aren't happy with the way Birch is handling this matter he'll soon be informed of that fact.
  20. Look on the bright side - you'd normally have to pay for that.
  21. Does the dead slug have a Twitter account? If not, get him signed up pronto.
  22. Chainrai's generous offer is dependent on certain high earners renegotiating their contracts - in other words, accepting considerably less than the outstanding amounts to be paid. If he doesn't get that agreement, his offer is withdrawn. Without the likes of TBH and Kanu (and, I'd assume, Lawrence, Norris, Kitson et al) he'll be able to spend only revenue income on wages and pocket other income (to wit, the remaining parachute payments). For those of us of a certain vintage, this saga is beginning to resemble that superb comedy show form the 70s, Soap. The start of each episode had a voice-over outlining the convoluted plot, invariably ending with the line "Confused? You won't be - after tonight's episode of Soap!" Needless to say, each episode left you more confused than the previous one...
  23. No great surprise about this. The FL has rules about a club's exit from administration, but nothing about starting a season in administration - unless of course it's a second consecutive season, which this won't be for Pompey. It's by no means the 'absolute guarantee that there'll be no further points penalties' that the News would like to portray though. I could easily see them exiting administration with no agreed CVA and suffering a points penalty as a result. Or, even if the proposed CVA from Portpin is accepted, they'll still struggle next season as next to nothing will be spent on the playing squad (or on anything much else for that matter).
  24. Well, we have a season ahead of us to see if he does just that.
  25. Also interesting to note that the handball which gave us the penalty was accepted as just something that had to be done by the commentator. No sending off for such a misdemeanour back then.
