I’d be happy with someone like Vieira, a Scott Parker, a Steven Gerrard. next manager needs to be a figure head, someone who comes in and gets the respect of the remaining players who don’t leave, straight away. Someone who will attract top young talent to the club on loan in the championship and give us a competitive edge in the transfer market. Vieira is used to working with young players, he’s young enough that he can be part of a rebuilding project too. what i definitely don’t want is another money ball stat driven appointment where we try and be too “clever”.
-
Our whole business model is recruiting young players on the basis when the move to a bigger club comes, we won’t stand in their way. It’s how we get the likes of Lavia. I know it’s not worked out well this season but if we’re seen to be a club blocking transfers, we won’t get the likes of Lavia again. If the bored stick with the recruit young talent strategy, all players with a big move will be allowed to leave imho

Be interesting who goes outside of those out of contract and for what kind of money, 5 in bold are nailed on in my opinion, could have up to £200m coming in. Lavia - £40-£50m - Will have clubs all over him, can demand a big fee KWP - £18 - £25m - Upwardly mobile prem clubs will be in, Brighton\Villa\West Ham etc Salisu - £15-£18m - Most obvious to leave, doesnt want to be here, not in the squad because of it Orsic - £6m - Will want to jump ship ASAP been a nightmare for him Che £12-£18m - Promoted team, one of the teams who just stay up will probably come in for him JWP - £ 35-£45m - Odd one, will want to leave, may leave, fee we'd want probably a stumbling block for teams who will be in for him, bigger clubs likely to go for any of the following before JWP - Rice\Maddison\Telemans\Bellingham\Mac Allister\Caicedo\Neves ABK - £20m - Up and coming German international, move back to his native Germany Bednarek - £10m - Proven international, wont want to play in the championship, a move to a lesser team in Ligue 1, La Laga etc on the cards DCC - £7m - Proven international, Champions League experience, wont want to play in the championship, a move to a lesser team in Ligue 1, La Laga etc on the cards Livermento - £20m (Dependant if clubs want to take the punt after the injury, will affect his value) Tella - will probably want to make him move to Burnley permanent, could probably get £15 - £20m for him. Onuachu - Loaned out - If selles gets the job full time, surely Onuachu will want a move, may stay if another manager sees something different in him.

We’ve 3 winnable home games in Palace, Fulham and Bournemouth. Plus away to forest. Thats 12 points and puts on 35, that might keep us up or put us in a position where we need to beat Liverpool on the last day. Liverpool probably won’t have anything to play for then and have been inconsistent. it’s unlikely and obviously we need to win all 4 of the games, but it’s not over just yet.

Best Rickie Lambert, a talisman only topped by Le Tissier in my lifetime, £1m we paid for him, Averaged a goal every other game. Sensational signing. Steven Davies, hugely underrated in my opinion and the glue that made us tick during the most exciting era of being a Saints fan over the last 40 years. I think we paid £250k set at a tribunal. VVD, how other teams overlooked him is an absolute mystery he looked world class the very first minute he stepped onto the pitch. Probably the most technically gifted player I’ve ever seen in a saints shirt. A bargin at £12m and a £63m profit Bertrand - Selling shaw for £30m and buying Bertrand for £10m was a master stroke. There was a period were Bertrand was probably the best left back in the country for 2 seasons. Should have played more for England, could easily of found himself at a bigger club. Pahars - without him we’d have gone down.

Absolutely this, I’d add optimism to that list to. I genuinely feel like we could get out of this.

Went to the game. positives. - settled back 4, Bednarek had a good game, Maitland Niles has had a few good performances in a row now. Bednarek/ABK partnership looks decent. - Alcaraz is a great signing. Improves us massively, workrate, can pick a pass, can finish. - midfield 3 of JWP, Lavia and Alcaraz is very strong - Theo/Che and Alcaraz pressing/workrate set the tone. - 2 clean sheets in 3 of Selles premier league games, in fact on conceding 1 goal in 3 games. negatives - Moi/Mara/Armstrong subs had a negative impact, especially Mara/Armstrong. We were pressing as a unit with Theo/Che/Alcaraz and it was working, Mara/Armstrong and Moi pressed individually and Leicester were able to play through it with relative ease. im all for subs at 60 minutes to maintain the tempo of the press, I get it, but the front two especially didn’t maintain that tempo and looked off the pace compared to Theo/Che. - Bazunu nearly cost us the points twice today, a few more mistakes and his careers over here, I’d take him out the firing line and rebuild his confidence in training/behind close doors games. - not yet convinced by Sulemana, few flashes of excitement, but need to utilise his pace more, plenty of chances to drop the ball in behind - first 25 minutes we were paralysed by fear, players looked really reluctant to play anything other than a safe 4 yard ball, which resulted in the ball going back more times than it went forward. Wins will hopefully change that and we’ll get more creative

Going to be a fight to the finish line, could realistically see this being a season where 40 pts maybe needed to stay up. Leeds form is terrible, no win in 10, we should be going their to win. Can see Palace getting drawn in their form over the last 10 is only 1pt better than ours now, Villa also lost 3 on the bounce. Leicester have Arsenal this weekend, if we beat Leeds and Arsenal do us a favour against Leicester, we could be going into the Leicester home game knowing a win will bring us level on points with them. Lets hope we can keep our performance levels and momentum up. Could see us winning the next 3 (the cup\ and both league games) after the weekend.

Rafa for me. Wins the dressing room over straight away, massive premier league experience, could probably convince him to sign a short term contract because of his age. keeps us up then we get Potter when Chelsea sack him 🤞
-
I voted for him to go. I thought we’d turned a corner after the Man City/Everton wins but we’ve gone backwards again. having the fan base onside is of such massive importance, the fact that 96% of saints fans want him gone is enough for me to say it’s time, regardless of my own thoughts. He’s never going to win them over now and the negativity is toxic to the point he has to go, it’s an untenable situation. I also think Jones has completely lost his way, he’s tried to be to clever, changed the team around, played around with formations etc. if he’d come in, picked a formation and picked the best available players every match without chopping and changing I think we’d be better off. that’s all we want from the next manager, come in, stick to a formation, stick to the same group of players, stick the best players in every game. Have a settled side and try and build momentum

Answer, I think, was in Jones rant. “Statisically there weren't better than me around Europe in terms of clean sheets, defending the box, balls in the box, xG, all those things” He was a money all appointment by, Rasmus Ankersen

Southampton(1) 1-2 (3)Newcastle - League Cup Semi Final - Second Leg
Dan Johnson replied to Chez's topic in The Saints
Saturday the more important game for me reference Lavia, so no issue with the team, using the squad, they should all be fresh -
“Kamaldeen Sulemana, recorded as the fastest player to compete in last year's World Cup, reaching a top speed of 35.7 kilometres per hour according to FIFA data, 2.4 km/h faster than Kylian Mbappe” I know he’s not the 20 goal a season striker everyone’s looking for, but pace alone can be a game changer/difference maker. Opposition teams will be forced to sit deeper giving us more possession, blunting their attack. Opposition teams may have to “double up” on Sulemana, giving more space/freedom to other forward players Faster players draw more free kicks as opposition players would rather give away fouls than space, resulting in more free kicks around the opposition area. Great news for JWP

it’s clearly player quality over managerial mistakes why we’re losing. I think we’re improving, slowly, but we are. Jones has made us more aggressive, we desperately needed that. We weren’t even competitive in the last few games under Ralph, we are now, we looked dangerous at times last night but we just are so blunt up top, we all know we need 1 or 2 clinical players to put the ball in the net. Che should have scored, Armstrong forced a great save out of Pope, Alcaraz forced a great save, finer margins last night than when we got played off the park in Ralph’s last game 1-4. Jones is also utilising the squad more, changes at 60 mins regularly is the correct move for a young squad when we’ve games twice a week. Managers can’t legislate for Diallo misplacing 10 passes a game, poor defence clearances consistently by our CBs, Bazunu making poor choices. Djenepo being tactically unaware. Most importantly strikers missing 1 on 1 opportunities, He can only use what he’s got. We created enough to get something from the game, the effort was there, we competed. It’s become a sound bite of Jones “we need a little bit more quality” but he’s right. We’ve a busy run so we have to utilise all the squad at the moment, but when we hit the run in and play once a week, Jones can have a settled 11 and I think we’ll start picking up results.

Southampton 0-1 Newcastle League Cup Semi Final 1st Leg
Dan Johnson replied to Saint_clark's topic in The Saints
Same old story. created enough chances to take something from the game, didn’t have a player to take the opportunities. positives from the performance -
I love seeing scenes like this, fucking love it. it’s clear from today that manager and players are completely together, prowsey pushing Jones in front of the fans to get praise shows the players want us to acknowledge Jones and get behind him. Bottom of the league but the feel good factor around the club is back, we’ve turned a corner.
-
time to close this thread and get behind the manager. 3 fantastic wins off the back of dire results shows he has what it takes to motivate these players lets get behind the manager COYR
-
COYR!!! What an appointment!
-
Happy with todays performance Technically there’s loads to do, however I saw effort, aggression, commitment, enthusiasm and that’ll help us build character and momentum… Palace have more quality in their side than us and we out battled them, disappointed we didn’t see the same against Forest but we’ve a free hit at home against Man City next, compete in that and the tide May begin to change for Jones.
-
Better than against forest… onwards and upwards
-
Completely agree. Think he’s arguably our 3rd best Center back. Great defender, poor footballer
-
Would take him 100% Similar to the Dan Burn transfer to Newcastle last January, everyone turning their noses up “Brighton Reserve” but he’s been an inspiration signing for them. Proven premiership players are exactly what we need right now.
-
Turgid performance today, looks miles off the pace. Don’t see any leadership qualities that would warrant him being captain at the moment either. He needs to step up physically and mentally to pull the team and his performances in the right direction
-
Worst performance in a very long time. Didn’t even compete today which is unforgivable. The summer window has completely back fired. We should have been signing players to make our first 11 stronger, 2 summer signings started today, 1 completely devoid of confidence. Our best 11 significantly weaker after letting some of the solid (if unspectacular) players leave. Wrong team selection too, started with the 3rd and 4th choice CBs in my eyes. Bezunu should have been dropped after the Lincoln howler, not recognising that Stu Armstrong should be well ahead of Elyounoussi too 😱🤷♂️ Team for next game Willy Perraud ABK DCC KWP JWP S Armstrong Lavia Edzoie Walcott Adams
-
Poor performances don’t make a bad player but he needs dropping at the moment. He’s a young player and needs protecting. First goal today was a howler, also some fault for the second. Allot of rash decisions which could have also led to a goal, feel like he’s overthinking/over trying now. id go with Willy
