The drive won't see the data so looks like we're going to have to do a fresh install chkdsk /r or /p doesn't work - says there are unrecoverable partitions. When you plug the hdd in another system as a slave drive it says the hdd needs formatting. Thanks for your help.

Anyone every succesfully fixed this problem without having to do a fresh install of windows? I've got from taking an image of an HP Desktop using Acronis True Image and restoring it to another HP. Has worked fine in the past using ghost doing a direct image from one drive to another. Tried 2 different HP images - both get the same error.
