I would add that the current regime and Cortese deserve credit in this regard. Cortese was perhaps a necessary 'evil' at the time; we have better balance now between ruthless business governance and being a 'club'.
Certainly we have a great business and playing model for a mid-sized club to follow. We can punch above our weight, and look to emulate in our own way, clubs like Athletico Madrid.
The causes question is seriously flawed.
The reasons for it's decline question is also seriously flawed.

LoL - as we all know IQ is distributed on a bell curve, and footballers and ex-footballers are not known for their intellects, so it will ever be thus, unless they change their pundit recruitment policy!
The more intelligent quarters of the media absolutely love us. We are refreshing, and our manner is wholesome, and the Academy - well it speaks for itself. Great article.
+ve: Auderweild (sp?)
-ves: slow, gave away possession, poor set pieces. Tadic and Pelle both off form they look like the Prem has gotten hold of them and killed the jois de vivre with which they played the first 10 games.
We were, like at Villa:
Slow
lost posession cheaply
poor set pieces and crosses
Pelle and Tadic out of form and out of sorts
Against City, we were doomed to lose by about 3 goals with those problems. Hell, we nearly lost to Villa.
