He's is a (happy) part of our history. How many games has he actually started these past 3 or 4 seasons? He's moved around and not made any impact. There are up and coming strikers throughout world football these days who could grow with the club. They will be hungry to succeed, not happy living off past success, and not that bothered about re-visitiong old haunts late at night around the town with old friends. Think he has started to add some maturity to his play this season, and especially since coming back from this latest knock. Also think that he is "Happy" in this team. Meaning in that he is given a structure and a role but is asked to (and able to) express himself. Not to the extent where the Team is built around him, but where he knows he can take risks and try things. He will do well to remember that come the summer. IMHO there won't not be many teams above us where he would get that freedom (for example at someone like Bolton or Stoke)
