Terrorist Attacks - WARNING: CONTAINS DISTRESSING IMAGES
buctootim replied to sadoldgit's topic in The Lounge
Of course its relevant. Wars are most often due to a mental set of 'my group over your group'. Sometimes religion is used because its a handy way to manipulate people. The Lords Resistance Army or the West Bank settlers use religion as justification, but Pol Pot, the Nazis and the Hutus, not so much. The Torah, Bible and Koran are full of passages about smashing the enemy and killing gay people, adulterers etc. The point is the vast majority of followers ignore the inconsistencies in their books and follow a peaceful religion. The extremists go around killing people who arent in the right club. The problem isnt the religion its the people promoting a fundamentalist dark ages version of that religion. IS probably wouldn't exist without Saudi support and the west tolerates its spreading of hate throughout the middle east and south Asia because we sell them arms. -
Thats probably what was tbf. Its a myth though to think you can just employ more police and not any of the support services necessary. Too many people misunderstand that as waste, in fact its efficiency. If you want more police doing front line work the most cost effective way to do that is more back office staff who are cheaper and take much of the paperwork away from trained police .

Dianne Abbot is a bit of a shambles - and yet May is making it look like we should give her a go as she couldn't do any worse. May was absolutely hopeless as Home Secretary and is worse as PM. Thats the Tory party today.

You have an idea about how to wax a lemon. About stuff more complex than that, not so much

Also known as food security. As big a part of national defence as the military. I don't think you or most Brexiteers have the slightest clue what free trade with China or India would actually mean. You could kiss goodbye to the car, steel and electronics industries for a start.

What is ludicrous about a customs union? do explain.

The point is that in the past governments invested in the young as the future of the country rather than treating them as pack horses to service the 'haves'. Subsidised higher education and affordable housing have all but disappeared. In 1935 85% of houses sold in London cost £750 or less. How much is that in today's money? £500,000?, £300,000? - nope just £45,000.
-
How old will your kids be then? 60? What will they use the money for? a buy to let to increase their retirement fund?
-
Of course. I'm not saying the generation who had the windfall are to blame for causing the situation - but they nonetheless have benefitted. We currently have a perverse situation where the working young, already saddled with student loans, sky high housing and stagnant wages are paying the healthcare and pension benefits of people who are often asset rich - far richer than they can ever hope to be.
-
Thats either dishonesty or stupidity. Since its beginnings during WW2 its always been clear that the state pension and healthcare was a pay as you go system - there was never a pot saved up for you. Your contributions paid for the benefits of the people retiring and sick then - and those contributions were much lower than working people pay to support you now. Young people today have a much heavier burden than you did when you were working. You benefited from lower housing costs and lower taxes and accordingly now have much higher levels of assets.
-
Actually you get more selfish and convinced that you've been uniquely smart by buying a house that went up in value and a pension that ballooned with the stock market (on average). In reality all you've done is taken part in a wealth transfer from the young - you remember them? the people you rely on to keep you fed, healthy and warm.

Do you not fact check anything? The Welsh Assembly did away with parking charges in Wales in 2008. The Cardiff UHW is one of the few remaining exceptions because the operator had a long term contract until 2021 and it would be unlawful to break it. Nothing Corbyn said is wrong. If only that were true of you even 10% of the time. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7273649.stm

Some of the papers are saying Johnson, Davis and Gove have cooked up a plan to behave like such total arses in negotiations that eventually the EU will call a halt. At which point Davis will scream "they're trying to blackmail us with ultimatums" and use that as an excuse for walking out of talks into the hardest of brexits. Its worse than incompetence.

Again, no. The performance shortfall was actually worse in the seven years 1965 to 1971 than it was in the seven years 1958 to 1964 despite the trendline showing an improvement. The rolling average causes the trendline to show a gradual improvement where none exists. What actually happened was a sustained, consistent, mostly level relative decline until 1972, a patchy volatile slight uptick between 1972 and 1980 and then a mostly consistent sustained improvement thereafter. There was no gradual trend, there were step changes. If you used a three year rolling average rather than what appears to be a ridiculous 15 year one you would get a totally different trendline. https://www.qimacros.com/lean-six-sigma-articles/trend-lines-can-lie/
