  16. That's the second question I shall be asking the Pope when I interview him later today...
  17. Link to his exact words? Off the top of my head, I think he said it would deter parties from setting a date purely based on when it thought was the best time for it to win, but that doesn't stop parties of any persuasion coming up with policies or dangling carrots at the fixed time of the election. Would be interested to see a transcript of what he said. I suspect he (like every politician) worded it craftily enough to not rule out the dangling of carrots per se, just that he was making it more difficult for parties to determine the timing of an election based on the size of said carrots. It's a load of vegetables whichever way you look at it.... ;-)
  18. What he said.
  19. Apart from a few obvious candidates (Fawlty Towers, Fools and Horses) most comedies "show their age" over the years as they reflect the attitudes and situations of the time they are made. Indeed, the fact that they no longer appear as funny or relevant in the modern world could be seen as a back handed compliment to the creator as it shows they got the style and humour precisely right for the period in question. Even something like the Young Ones, which everyone fawned over in my school days, looks dated now and doesn't make me laugh as much as it did when it first went out in the 80s. IMHO of course.
  20. Well, we've already had two posters say they attended this one, so not that slim I would boldly venture.... both have 'chosen' not to give feedback on what was discussed. Just an observation...
  21. I've pondered on the same question myself before. If there are hundreds of countries with levels of 'artificial' debt in the multi-billions (which of course there are), why don't all these countries get together and say to the speculators: "ok, enough's enough....you've taken us for a ride for the last 30+ years....now it's our turn....we're writing off x% of our collective debt because we now realise it was accrued through self perpetuating gambling" Or words to that effect. Yes, I know, probably a lot of naive assumptions there but what is actually stopping the debt laden countries of the world calling time on those who hold said countries to ransom through market manipulation and computer screen financial jiggery-pokery? They'll make a socialist out of me yet...
  22. Political parties in pre-election vote maximisation revelation shocker... ;-)
  23. Well, indeed. That's precisely what's happened after previous such dinners. Just curious that this one hasn't given rise to the same level of public feedback. Seemingly.
