In terms Saints getting van Dijk, Celtic going out of the Champions League as early as possible would speed up any potential transfer. I didn't say guaranteed, but in contract talks the player/agent will want to know where they fit into the manager's plans. Cork may have been offered a deal by Saints, but it wouldn't have been that of a player likely to start a lot of games. He was dropping down the pecking order, plus Saints have youngsters in central midfield they are bringing through.

Saints didn't offer him a contract where he was likely to be first choice and a regular starter if everyone was fit. He did get that from Swansea.

No, there is no need for anyone to bid higher than the release clause. If you match the release clause it is automatically accpeted and is then down to the player to decide if he wants to leave. This is a concept Pompey fans struggled with when Jed Wallace was sold.
