In terms Saints getting van Dijk, Celtic going out of the Champions League as early as possible would speed up any potential transfer. Even if they reach the group stage that doesn't mean they won't sell him this summer. I didn't say guaranteed, but in contract talks the player/agent will want to know where they fit into the manager's plans. Cork may have been offered a deal by Saints, but it wouldn't have been that of a player likely to start a lot of games. He was dropping down the pecking order, plus Saints have youngsters in central midfield they are bringing through.

Saints didn't offer him a contract where he was likely to be first choice and a regular starter if everyone was fit. He did get that from Swansea.

Not sure why they think that, as he is left footed. Used play on the left (both left back and a few occasions on the left of midfield) but the club are now using him as a left sided centre back.
