New rivalries can start with other clubs over the course of playing the game.

van Dijk has just moved into midfield in your scenario, Saints would be on the attack at this point. Why so rigid with the tactics? This didn't apply to Ronald Koeman when he played as a centre back, he often liked to break forward in open play.

How did you think he should get to know how his team-mates play, get to know our system and get match fit? Wouldn't playing a match help? Reed hasn't exactly played a lot for the 1st team either and Davis often plays in an attacking midfield role and may do again on Thursday.

What does the regulation say? Because the way round it is so obvious it seems pointless there being a rule.

The club are using the phrase "under 4,000 regular seats". St Mary's has over 1,700 hospitality and box seats which may be hard to sell out for this game.

Les Reed confirmed Saints made a larger bid for Alderweireld than Tottenham made. So the money for a new centre back is available.

Stephens played 41 games for Swindon last season, to go from that to 5th choice for Saints and rarely playing might not be good for his development. Might be better having a loan at a Championship club to test him more regularly now that he is used to playing every week.

Why does the alternative to playing Pelle have to be an identikit version of him? We can play with a different kind of striker or pair of strikers as an alternative. Last season without Pelle we used Mane and Long as a striker pairing away at Chelsea and it worked well. We now have Juanmi and Rodriguez as other options.
