Dagenham 1 Saints 3 - Post Match Comments
revolution saint replied to St Chalet's topic in The Saints
Probably best to quote the table after todays games. -
Spot on, I don't really want promotion. I quite like being in div 3 and talking about what we'll do in the prem rather than actually being in it. I hope Adkins is given the chance to build countless teams to get us out of this division whilst we can concentrate on what our training facilities, youth team and ground capacity will be like.
-
I don't really want to get into another "Why was AP sacked" argument - I disagreed but there you go - I don't run the club so my opinion is irrelevant. What I would say is that before the season the expectation was promotion and that expectation should remain the same. It's all very well talking about 40K stadiums and being in the premiership but quite frankly at the moment I only care about this season. The squad isn't bad but does need some additions (I think) if we want automatic promotion so I'd prefer to see us active in the loan and transfer window rather than talking about grand visions. We possibly may be doing everything we can but all this five year plan and competing if and when we get to the prem doesn't address the "here and now" problems. It's the same with the style of football - maybe in the future I'd care about it but at the moment just winning is enough for me. We're in div 3 and I don't expect stellar football just consistent wins - I hope that the concentration on the style of football isn't to the detriment of results. I can't say I've enjoyed Adkins brand of football any more than I enjoyed Pardew's but the draws and defeats have left me more disappointed.

Kahn proved today that even though he may still get hit that he can take a punch. Good performance and well done to the conditioning lads!

Depends whether you have mortgage protection or not but that's a different topic altogether. My argument isn't whether it's right or wrong to charge students for their education merely that they are having to pay more for it, it won't be a better education and that they have a legiitimate right to protest against it.
-
Whether they believed the libdems could carry it out or not is irrelevant - that's what they voted for and if the party that pledged to carry it out fails to do that then they have a right to disagree. I thought that was a fairly simple argument. In fact it's not really even up for debate is it? You vote for a party because of their policies and if they renege you can disagree. Easy really. It is a debt. In the same way your mortgage is a debt. Of course there are caveats but at the end of the day most students will end up paying more money because of tuition fees. Owing money is called debt. Hope that helps.
-
Well the libdems have broken their promise - they said they would never support a rise in tuition fees and they have (or at least the leadership has) so their supporters have a right to be annoyed. When they voted for a party they voted for their policies and even in a coalition govt if that chosen party reneges on their promises then it's supporters have a right to disagree. There wasn't a single lib dem voter who voted for coalition so stop calling them idiots. The fact is that the debt on students is increasing and they won't get a better education for it - they're making up the shortfall in govt. funding. It's a legitimate argument to say they should be paying for their education and it's also legitimate to argue that a maintenance in govt. spending and increasing access to higher education will benefit both the country and the student. It's up to the individual to make their mind up. The vast majority of demonstrators today were peaceful but had their point to prove - you may disagree with it but it doesn't make them idiots.

I'm not sure being leftwing, idealogical and wanting to lock up criminals are mutually exclusive.

Good interview by Cortese and a lot of encouraging stuff. It's nice to aspire to be Barcelona - I don't think we can be but nothing wrong with trying. The only question marks are over finance really. To what extent was Markus bank rolling us? We've spent pretty big for a div 1 club and even though we're debt free and a big club for this division you'd have to wonder how long we could carry on if the financial burden is entirely the club's. There was talk of Markus financing the training ground developments is this still the case given that that costs have tripled? The same would apply to transfers - maybe not so much in div 1 but if we do get promoted where is the financial muscle coming from to be better than the other champ clubs (some with parachutte payments)? Of course I'm not saying money is everything but it helps and the U18 and development squad are probably a couple of years away from taking up the slack if we fail to invest in quality players. I realise that maybe Cortese can't answer those questions but given our justifiable anger at Pompey getting away with spending beyond their means then I don't think it's wrong to ask the question, "where is the money coming from?" I don't want anyone thinking that I'm having a go at Cortese at all - just that on the points above we still have unanswered questions - if this all goes tits up and we're lumbered with more debt we can't afford then we'd be kicking oursleves for not at least considering asking questions.

I don't watch any of these reality talent type shows because they seem a bit too much like pantomimes. You know at least one of the judges has to be the villain that everyone loves to hate etc etc. I used to really hate the amount of interest all these shows generate and all their fake controversies but now I really couldn't care less. I did take an interest last year with the campaign to get RATM to number one but in hindsight that actually helped X-Factor in the "no publicity is bad publicity" stakes. I'd rather those of us who don't like shows like this just ignore them. When people ask me about whether Ann should be voted off strictly come dancing or whether X Factor is less about talent than popularity I just say I don't give a f*ck and that kills off the conversation.

Homework taught me an important life skill - how to avoid work. I plagiarised for all I was worth and this was before the interweb. The trick I found was nicking the swotty kids homework on the morning it was to be handed in, copying it during tutor period and then handing both in just before the submission time. Later I learnt just to be friends with the clever kids - they'll happily give you their work for a bit of popularity. Without homework I doubt I'd have learned the value of getting someone else to do your work for you.

I didn't go yesterday but from what I've seen so far Ricky has been poor compared to last season. It's not just the goals either. There was a moment in the Brighton game where he turned and had space to run - last season he would have but instead he tried a pass that didn't come off. I have no idea whether it's confidence, injury or attitude but to pretend that he's performing to the same levels as last season, in my opinion, simply isn't true. Unfortunately we don't have many other options but if we did then I would have thought he would be close to being dropped. Personally I wouldn't sell him but if the reason for the poor form is that he doesn't want to be here then I would get rid.

I'd like to thank all two responses, course now it's been moved to technology forum I don't expect anymore. Dopey mod clearly was incapable of reading or understanding the original post.
-
I'm in the same position as you then. There are loads of "classics" which are free and I would take advantage of but the new bestsellers don't really offer too much of a discount. That said the format is appealing.
-
Anyone got a kindle and what's it like? I really should post this in the technology forum but hardly anyone reads that so I'll open up the debate to ebooks - good idea or bad and will they kill the printed book?

It's a squad game it's as simple as that but you have to win games of football at the same time. Now Guly do Prado is a great professional and he's shown that in training so that's good. He's willing to learn and be part of a squad. He's come over from Serie A where the style of football is different, to a different culture but listen he's starting to adapt now and give Nigel Adkins selection problems so that's good. He's loving being part of Southampton football club but who wouldn't? It's a great club. Ultimately though we want to win the division and if Guly can help us win games then great, it is after all about winning games of football - it's as simple as that.

My sister is a solicitor and part time as well working three days a week. She has Mondays off anyway and isn't entitled to claim any time due to the fact that most Bank Holidays fall on a Monday. Obvioulsy having a vested interest she's looked into this a fair deal and as it stands there's no obligation on the employer to provide any TOIL to part time employees who wouldn't normally work on a day that a bank holiday falls. As long as you're providing the statutory amount of holiday then it's up to the firm. It's a tricky situation because of course if you're a part time worker who normally works Mondays then you'd have a disproportionate amount of time off compared to your other part time counterparts. Anyway the upshot is that no one has ever brought this to court and there's no precedent for it so firms are left to figure it out for themselves.

I am indeed pleased about this - it's another chance to get all the royals together in one place.

Anyone going to watch this? It's a bit of a non-contest for me. Harrison has consistently proved himself to have no bottle and I hope Haye comprehensively out boxes him and then floors him. I think it's a travesty that Harrison has actually got a title shot at all.

About 150 pages into "Count of Monte Cristo". At 1300 pages and 170 years old it's a bit daunting but actually it's really easy to read and it rattles along at a fair pace.

I notice Dave is now referring to us in his big society vision as citizens. We're not we're subjects.
-
So if we'd kept pardew you'd be expecting promotion but getting rid of him means you'd accept less? Great logic there....
-
No, there are no excuses this season.
-
Comparing one manager in the same division with another? yeah that's crazy talk for sure......come on at the start of the season we were dead certs to go up and we all believed it. I still believe we have the squad to do it - they showed that last season. So what's changed? getting rid of the manager would explain it but keep your head in the sand if you must....
-
Under pardew defeat against MK Dons wouldn't have been acceptable, a home draw against colchester wouldn't and neither would a draw against Yeovil. It shouldn't be acceptable under Adkins either.
