Buying someone who has only played good like twice in the whole season doesn't make sense to me

what has he shown at saints to confirm he is a very good player, apart from scoring a great goal at man city?

Can we not replace like for like or as a club do we always look for the cheapest option & hope it pays off?

If a 15-20 million rated player can be replaced with a 3.5m player why wasn't everyone after him?? or are we taking a gamble that he will be as good as Clyne?
