As it stands, do we have a better midfield than Utd?
NickG replied to Saint Garrett's topic in The Saints
Often wondered if you put player who is so good in poor premiership team who they would do. Guess we had MLT, but how would Reading plus Messi have done? BTW I was bit tongue in cheek with the single game comparisons but think Morgan's season stands up against those top midfielders -

Very different. CM is much more a head to head of players in same position. jos only lasted 20 mins didn't he? As you mention Liverpool game - Morgan outclassed Gerrard in that game -

He was outclassed by Morgan at St Marys in March. -

Puts you apart from the three or fours trolls who clearly losing any rationale debate, ignore reasoned posts that undermine their jumbled thinking, go around in circles but failed to admit they are wrong. Glad several agreed with my points earlier, sorry there were a couple of typos as was doing several things at once and typing on phone. Still gave Baz excuse not to answer any of points made but moan about typos and too long for him to follow! Lol. Rare to see him, Glasgow or Alpine to discuss, just disrespect other views and moan. I am happy supporting saints - if I wasn't I'd stop, its not compulsory. I also celebrate when we do well. Personally being realistic and happy clapper isn't an insult. Cant see how it would be? Can see how being miserable, negative and consistently proven to be unrealistic due to pessimism could be. -
Don't get Mayuka or Sharp situation at all. Think/ thought Mayuka could be exactly what we need - fast direct different option, coming on for last 20. But hardly given chance - looks ok when tried but not shone, appreciate hard as sub sometimes. Sharp another good option as sub. Maybe not an all round highly skilled player, but can score - surely would worry defenders late in a game if we are chasing for a goal? Even wonder if Lee would have given us a better option last season when chasing a game and only having Steve De and Guly. As someone said two managers don't seem keen. Attitude in training? Would surprise me but don't get it

Not read everything but has anyone said they can see us consistently be ahead of the top 6? The clappers are generally just more realistic and enjoy the club, its progress and optimism. The delusional posters are the handful of posters who; Have been hugely and consistently too pessimistic in their predictions for the season. ( one notorious poster hugely wrong for at least three seasons in a row). Fail to notice that the way the club has gone about their transfers has not been amateurish and failing to address the needs but has moved club forward every year (how many clubs do that?) Fail to remember that huge majority of transfers are concluded at the end of the window. (Still while away). Think MP made an enquiry for a top forward, thought it would happen and has sat back doing nothing. With no evidence at all. BBC reported that he is workaholic at training ground 7-7. But guess never crosses his mind the think about transfers or how will use his squad. Who fail to notice that all clubs have regular signings they regret including Man U. But cos Forren didn't work out or Mayuka seems a strange signing we are clueless. Who think a player signed in league 1 or championship and unsurprising isn't a star in prem is now useless and deserves personal abuse. Who don't understand that a £16m players is not suddenly a waste of £16m if they fail to reach their expectations in first season. Maybe if never played again and left on free transfer but otherwise not true. Who think signing two players for £20m early in window is a worrying / negligent / disappointing window. Spending more so far than virtually every club. Signing players well thought of by journalists. Players who forums at Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal fans site had threads running hoping would go to them. Who think current squad is going to mean season of watching boring 0-0 draws. I loved last season, think one 0-0 ? Which I enjoyed. But agree that anyone thinking Chelsea are worried about us is deluded -

I wonder how many saints fans over the last 20 odd years would believe in 2013 after one season back in prem, still weeks away from the period when 90%+ of transfers are done, when we have signed two young international players wanted by fans of Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool, Spent over £20m Kept young player linked with top 4 clubs Promoted U19 international players to squad By chairman who has proved every window he moves club forward That fans would be moaning about we are lacking / negligent or amateur? -

So objectively we have only been outspent by Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City and Spurs. Not really loads. Not teams I personally see us chasing currently. agree subjectively harder for all to agree but having read fans threads on Liverpool's and Man U's forums complimenting our progress and wanting our new signings at our club , think most would be happy. Always need to look to improve, but balancing with stability. Would be good to see international star CF but happy so far. would like a fast winger / forward maybe as a more direct sub option - option I hoped Mayuka was! -

Can't say I am up to date with other clubs. Who are the many sides who have spent £20m and more wisely? -
Clearly don't know what they are doing. To be honest the club hasn't improved under them... Or have we moved forward every transfer window since they arrived? If they are clueless god help the other 91 clubs!
-
Think you need to read post more carefully before commenting. I didn't mention the transfer policy just the greedy need for a £20m signing before being able to look forward to seeing Saints. Of course its great to keep improving. Guess like some others I quickly get excited about the prospect of signing players I have never seen play. And of course it is exciting to see new players play. I have never said we should not improve, or sign a £20m player. If you think it is foolish that I still get excited for the start of the season, with or without £20m signings you are entitled to that view. As I am entitled to any views on those who are not excited about a new season without a £20m signing, even though only 2nd back in prem and seeing talented developing young players.
-
Only really look forward to our team starting if we add £20m international forward? No wonder a lot of moaning on here!

Saints near the bottom for players signed, any cause to panic?
NickG replied to Mr X's topic in The Saints
If you want to guarantee top 6 then maybe panic...otherwise look forward to the new season. A season watching quality young players, probably showing inconsistency, some amazing wins, some very disappointing games... But safely in the middle third of the table. -
Within 12 months of being called into England squad?
-
Lee did look exciting when he arrived, lively and cracking goal - we've not really had much chance to judge further. Doubt anyone expected other two to star in top division.
-
Not sure about further signings but agree with rest
-
Think its a shame you didn't get chance to see him play, am sure would have changed your view, ( maybe not totally). The value for money debate will be very different if he is sold for a profit, which could easily happen. Very different. Ramirez is competing against rested footballers. Its not he is feeling bit tired its having him at his best. If tennis was a team game and you would select the fresh Murray who hadn't played 5 sets.

http://forums.liverpoolfc.com/threads/341755-Southampton-watch/?page=2 Interesting read. My thoughts We will play brilliantly at times followed by team not turning up, age of squad will bring inconsistency. If had to guess finish would go for 8th but wouldn't be stunned if higher or a fair bit lower due to inconsistency. Reasons higher than last season; 1) defence. In last 30 games only 7 teams let in less goals. After establishing (Yoshida and Boruc) we have added CB. 2) Age of side. It is reasonable to expect Clyne, Shaw, Yoshida, Schneiderlin, Ramirez, JayRod to still be improving. 3) manager - stability, positive pre season, unity. 4) most season performed as top 8 side apart from start. 30 games - top 8. Albeit last 6 bottom 3. 5) added what look like good quality additions. 6) last season Stoke 2 points, Everton 1, west ham 1, Sunderland 1, QPR 3, - can imagine Wanayama signing reaction to rerurns like these. 7) already said about young players but think Jay Rod, Ramirez and Shaw could have big seasons for us - maybe not all three.
-
Three things: 1) two out three main targets 2) right Chambers going to be first team squad RB - would not expect 3 in squad so doubt signing. 3) pleased to hear comments about Jay Rod - could be big player for us
-
Strange thing about lallana - several other prem club fans rave about him on their message boards after playing us (as do Ramirez). He also got called into England squad - pretty impressive in first season in prem. Having said that, his post injury form means his place is vulnerable.
