That's ironic, Leeds RL fans are generally well behaved as are the team TBH. The worst behaved ? Those from Hull FC and Hull KR, the two sets of fans loathe each other with a vengeance.

Yes, Ted was of course known for scoring goals so I was surprised that Boyer out scored him 17/14 in 1977/78. Would never have thought that ( or believed it) unless I had looked it up. Tony Funnell actually scored 8 goals in 11 games( plus 4 as sub) including of course the crucial equaliser at Orient which all but sealed promotion. If memory serves he was only in the side as Austin Hayes and Tony Sealy picked up injuries and were out for a long period.

I used to love that TBH even though Jimmy Saville used to irritate the hell out of me, the music ( once he decided to play any) was usually very good. That said my recollection is that you knew the year so maybe the show you refer to was earlier ( which makes you very old indeed lol )

Think I was always lucky with reception. I remember ( sadly it has to be said) listening to the local footie scores on Radio Solent on a Sunday afternoon and just waiting for scores like Shirley Rovers 18 Totton Town 1 !!

Fortunately I always had my own radio to my ear either listening to a Saints match or Radio Luxembourg. That said I do remember one game, probably in the 60's, when we were leading 1-0 and by the time I had had my dinner we had lost 3-1. I needed a new radio after that !

I know I'd rather be playing but I guess he didn't know until he had left when he was on to a good thing. We should have tried to get him back on loan !

Indeed, I remember it well. Probably the most boring Saints game of all time ! You're right, apart from that one shot absolutely nothing happened, at least on the pitch. Still we were promoted so boring was Ok though I would have loved it if we had stuffed Spuds!

Boyer was and still is one of my favourite players. I'll revert back to having him as my avatar at the end of the month! Showed after we got promoted how good he really was but even in 77/78 scored 17 goals to Ted's 14 so played a massive part in our promotion.

Even played a whole game in goal for Chelsea once, kept a clean sheet if I recall v Ipswich ? Very good player.

My favourite player at that time, unfortunately I wasn't at WHU but it still sounded a great goal on the radio!

And only made the B team in the greatest ever XI golden post but that's another story!

But still got paid £28k a week for it !

Agree with that but as others found the grass is not always greener elsewhere. Even Mick Channon did not really hit the heights at Man City yet came back home and had a few more very good seasons with us of course. Rod Wallace and even Danny were two more from the 80's whose careers nose dived after leaving us. It's been the case with many players as long as I can remember.
