Hard to see it properly but it is rare the goalkeeper would not get a free kick if he had both hands on the ball. Of course Southend claimed he did but only one man makes the final deciscion and the ref did consult his linesman before awarding the goal so on that basis I can't think Southend were hard done to.

Thoroughly enjoyable game, Leeds winning 18-10 and deservedly so though it was close all the way through.

For me this season is all about rebuilding and setting the platform for a promotion next season. I have been a fan of AP since day 1 and though I don't believe every single decision he has made has necessarily been one I agree with there has NEVER been a Saints manager in over 40 years that I have always agreed with ! However, some of the things he has done and is doing especially quality signings have been very impressive. So as optimistic as I always am I do believe a play off place is possible. However, more likely mid table or just above and those 10 points could well cost us a play off place. However, if they do then I'll not be upset as few could argue I believe that they weren't justified after the shambles of the Lowe regime and it was not that long enough I was sat here really concerned we might not have a team.

A goal is a goal, that's the end product without which everything else is of no value. Pretty simple really and I could bore everyone, including myself, to death with a list of players who rarely if ever scored from outside the box. For us though Ted MacDougall did little else but score goals and his partnership with Phil Boyer was a main reason why we were promoted in 77/78.

Only a guess but as the 4th qualifying round is 24th October I'd say either on the Sunday after any live game or as it always was in the past lunchtime on the Monday. Of course all days/dates/times now are subject to the law that says if they can be changed to cause maximum inconvenience they will be !

It certainly could be a double edged sword as you suggest and give refs the chance to bottle a tough decision and send a player to the "sin bin" rather than sending him off in the knowledge that any incident will pretty certainly be reviewed after the match. In Rugby League they of course have "sin bins" though players are often placed "on report" usually for a high tackle and no other action taken at the time. It has the merit of keeping 13 v 13 for the vast majority of games but a player might escape any punishment ( or get 10 minutes in the "sin bin" ) in the actual game when he should have been sent off.
