York is a good shout and I like the idea of the Malham area – beautiful countryside, plus I had my first ever experience of Old Peculiar in the Buck Inn at Malham. How about Oxford? Not exactly a typical English city and too many students and tourists for some, perhaps; nevertheless, some beautiful old architecture; good museums, art galleries and places of historical interest; some very decent pubs and restaurants; great if you’re a fan of Morse, Lewis and Endeavour; and handily placed for visits to the Cotswolds or to places such as Blenheim Palace.

Humour is a funny thing Bletch. That little skit I created seemed quite humorous whilst it resided in my head – albeit in a lame poor-man’s League of Gentlemen sort of way – but transferred to the written page it became more sh1t than skit, and I can well understand why you may have thought I’d gone mental(ler). -

Waking up to find that I'd p1ssed in the airing cupboard was a rather too frequent pastime of mine when I was a drunken teenager. -

You’re right Fowllyd, those mushrooms said some very nice things about the rashers and eggs; sadly, they weren’t so complimentary towards me after I ate them. Equally as sadly, I’m starting to doubt that my posts are complementing this thread. -

Sorry for the tardiness of my reply bletch; I’ve been in a dark and rather frightening place with very limited means of contact to the outside world this week, namely, my mother’s house on the I.O.W. The question was simply this: do you prefer to be addressed as Bletch or bletch? P.S. Having re-read my previous post I’m wondering whether the roadside fungi that Mrs Stickman is gathering to compliment my Sunday rashers and eggs are actually edible common mushrooms after all. -
Great shame a few of our players were below par today; yet, despite this, we could still have taken something away from this game, so that in itself has to be encouraging – not to mention bloody frustrating.

Dear Bletch, Fowllyd’s above post has galvanised me to broach something that I’ve been meaning to ask you for some time now, but have been – up to now, at least – too shy, or too unsure that the right moment had arrived. Even now, I’m uncertain as to whether or not this is the right moment, whether or not you’ll feel I’m being too forward or too familiar, whether or not you’ll feel I’m rushing things. I know that you’re a stickler for protocol – that’s why I want to do things properly. Perhaps I should approach your parents first or sound out your chums? Should I raise the matter with you whilst standing up, sitting down, on one knee, or in the prone position? Should I send flowers? Oh my goodness, I’m so anxious … and when I’m anxious … I tend to choke … over my words … and hyperventilate … and stutter … and stammer … bear with me Bletch: Matron, matron, I need my inhaler … NO!, not Nicholas Naughty Needle … please not Lionel Liquid Cosh … please, please not Stanley Straight Jacket …please, please, please not Gilbert Gimp Mask … call yourself a Sister of Mercy... tell those men to let go of me … they’re hurting … don’t make me go in there … it’s pitch black, for fúck sake … I don’t want to go to sleep for a week … I haven’t asked Bletch what I wanted to ask him: Bletch, bletch!!!! Bletch, bletch!!! Bletch, bletch!! Bletch, bletch! Do you prefer me to capitalise your name or to leave it uncapitalised? zzzzz zzzz zzzz z z -

I say Bletch, you Gosport fellas dole out lifetime achievement awards with the same delightful largesse as Gosport Gladys dishes out her favours on a Saturday night. Of course, it goes without saying, I’m more than happy to accept, as long as it doesn’t involve anyone putting a plastic bag over my head or dyeing my hair – I’m happy with the way it is, thank you very much. I’ll have you know I’m known as Silver Fox in certain shady quarters. -

Well, at least you’ve got one of Bletch’s Life Time Achievement Awards heading your way Fowllyd – not bad for an afternoon’s work! -

Incidentally, the famous Eric Morecambe, who once played the spoons on TV, came from Morecambe and not Clacton-on-Sea, nor Clacton-on-the-Sea -

I think there may be frictions because in last night’s Location Location Location Kirsty and Phil were looking for properties in Ruislip, but neither of them mentioned South Ruislip. -

Do you know what Fowllyd, it’s spooky that you’re so keen on the phrase ‘popular beat combo’ today, because on Fridays I visit Wetherspoons and eat one of their chicken and spare-rib meals. I believe it’s true to say that this is their most ‘popular meat combo’ I think we could be on to a new word game – Bletch will be pleased. Oh, and just to keep on topic, I’m pleased to report that I’ve never had food poisoning from ‘Spoons. -
I quite like it but Mrs Stickman doesn’t, so that’s a resounding NO from our household. But with regards to the name, perhaps it’s worth recalling that this project has been ‘downgraded’ over the years. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/district/southampton/8478065.Planned_landmark_tower_could_become_student_digs/

Give it a few weeks and we could have 4 international centre-backs in our squad. -
Inevitable but still sad to see Balcs and Bates go – the latter played a big part in providing one of my most exciting ever cricket moments: the last ball victory over Warwickshire at Lord’s in 2012. Brilliant keeper.

Half of it is devoted to the Titanic and half to Southampton Gateway to the World. I know the Titanic has been very well covered over the years, but I found the links of the crew to the city to be very well displayed in this museum – very interesting maps of the city showing how many of the crew came from the Northam and Chapel areas etc. There were also interesting displays, maps etc of how the city developed over the centuries and the different nationalities that passed through or made their home there. I shall probably visit again when the temporary exhibit features WWI (from Oct 11) http://www.seacitymuseum.co.uk/?page_id=221

Stayed in Southampton after Saturday’s match and took the opportunity to visit the Sea City museum yesterday. I spent a good couple of hours in there and felt it was good value for the £8.50 entry fee; however, with many museums being free / donations only these days, I’m interested what other posters think. Apologies if this has been discussed previously; I searched for a link but couldn’t find one.

Ah yes, I remember that 1974 Worcester match. I left school that year and was waiting to start my apprenticeship so had plenty of time of my hands. My mate and I travelled over to the United Services ground from the Island every day for ‘Portsmouth Week’ – IIRC Hants played Warwickshire in the other fixture. Gordon Greenidge and Barry Richards opening the batting and Andy Roberts bowling – happy days! As for player of the season, like you say, there are quite a few candidates, but I think I’d be tempted to it to Smith for his all-round performance in all competitions.
