I’m absolutely delighted with that win; the way we held our nerve during that run chase was fantastic! Does anyone know whether Hampshire will get an allocation of tickets for Finals Day that will go on general sale to non-members, or is it best for me to try to get tickets direct from Edgbaston etc?

BRITISH WOODPECKERS Great Spotted Woodpecker? Aye, since I went with Portsea Lil I’ve developed a horrible rash. Green Woodpecker? Yikes, it’s oozing pus. Lesser Spotted Woodpecker? Phew, the cream Doc gave me is working a treat. -
Can anyone guess the type of meat I've been eating today?

Do you like chicken? – well, suck this, it’s fowl. -
As someone who grew up during the Cold War, there does seem a certain irony in the Russian leader becoming the political darling of the far-right in certain quarters. Here is a link to an article published in the New Republic magazine May 2014 by Andrew Foxall, Director of the Russia Studies Centre at The Henry Jackson Society, a London-based international affairs think-tank: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/117838/putins-far-right-european-admirers-run-european-parliament-may It’s always important to check out sources, so here is a link for people to decide for themselves the credibility and possible biases or prejudices of the Henry Jackson Society. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Jackson_Society It’s also interesting to read what some of the USA hard-right Republicans think about Putin (admittedly this link is from a liberal source published in March 2014): http://www.politicususa.com/2014/03/10/republicans-dream-leader-vladimir-putin.html

Bletch, I’ve been abroad for a week and deliberately cut myself off from all forms of news and communication during that time. On my return I’ve found your zeitgeist very useful for quickly catching up with events! Excellent resource, sir! Pity it couldn’t tell me whose f*cking dog it was shat on my drive when I was away.

Effectively, we need Surrey to lose their remaining two games, or to draw one and lose one, or to win one and lose one really heavily, or to … actually it’s much easier to just accept that we will be away in the quarter-final

Agree. I’m a great admirer of Shane Warne and gratefully appreciate what he did for Hampshire, but I’ve often wondered what the likes of Derek Shackleton, Peter Sainsbury, Roy and Malcolm Marshall, Richard Gilliat, Barry Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts, Trevor Jesty, David Turner, Mark Nicholas, Robin Smith, Shaun Udal et al made of the decision to name one of the stands after him.

I was very impressed with Matt Coles tonight against Essex: brilliant pinch hitting, and I liked the way he was annoyed with the dropped catches off his bowling – great competitive attitude.

I’ll give a shout for Brixham: one of the largest fishing fleets in the country, good fish restaurants and decent range of pubs around a very pretty and interesting working harbour. Stroll around the harbour, marinas and along the breakwater, swim from Breakwater Beach, have a meal and a beer at the Old Market House, Prince William or Breakwater Café, or walk to Berry Head, stopping for another beer on the terrace at Berry Head hotel – superb views over Torbay. If you’re feeling really energetic walk the coastal path to Kingswear: beautiful coastal scenery – but, be warned, it’s rated as one of the most strenuous sections of the entire South West Peninsular Coastal Path. Boat trips from Brixham to Torquay and Dartmouth etc. and a variety of beaches within walking distance of the town.

Yeah, it resonates with me as well, especially as I also grew up in an Isle of Wight village, albeit a few decades before the OP.

First of all, thanks Weston for the info – it’s much appreciated. I managed to get down for one of my, sadly, all too infrequent visits to the Rose Bowl last night, witnessing what turned out to be another disappointing performance. Like Leicestersaint I was surprised that we chose to bowl first; and like Give it to Ron I agree that Carbs seems to be struggling to come to terms with his England rejection – although it was good to see him and Maxwell sharing a laugh and joke together on the outfield after last week’s run-out debacle. Watching Maxwell scratching around at the grease, I did find myself questioning the playing value (as opposed to commercial value) of bringing in high-profile marquee players for the T20 – it’s fine when they’re firing but when they’re not, as Wadesmith said the other day they’re virtually undroppable, and I think this puts pressure on the rest of the team. Anyway, I’m off on my summer holidays for a week or so tomorrow; I’m going to deliberately avoid this place along with Saints and Hants news, and hopefully come back to discover that Hants have got back on track and that Saints have landed half a dozen world-class signings! P.S. I’m very envious of those that will be watching the Rose Bowl test match, because, although England isn’t exactly my favourite team these days, I can’t think of many places I’d rather spend 5 days. Have a good time fellers!

It’s a shame Beattie and Basham never really got it together – sounds like they would give the opposition a right good kicking.

Perhaps I’m being daft but I keep thinking about the way Morgan made a point of running over to the manager after scoring against Newcastle, and this makes me think that, out of all our players, Morgan may be the one to end up following MP to Spurs. I hope I’m wrong.

What amazes me even more is the people that put themselves up for Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies and say stuff like “I’ve been too embarrassed to discuss this with my local GP, so …."
-
Well, let’s just say whoever it was should be on the legends’ banner imo
-
Aye, anyone old enough to remember our legendary alehouse brawlers team will probably recall the story of how one of our heroes had to be substituted a few minutes into a pre-season game because he was too p issed to run around. Happy daze.

No Tim, just like the subject of this thread, shell suit on the outside, slimeball on the inside
-
Yeah, let’s hope so! We need some solid batting tomorrow and then a good performance on Friday night against Middlesex to get us going again. Disappointing couple of weeks.
-
Looks innocent on the outside, but inside this fellow is a complete slimeball.
-
Thank you Markus. Your memory will live on forever in the hearts of Saints’ fans.
