  1. I Bought 2 x Ipswich and 2 X Cov tickets today with no problem. No suggestion whatsoever that I needed to buy Barnsley too.
  2. Well remembered! from the days when you were lucky to get a Saints commentary on the radio, let alone a game shown on TV.
  3. Apologies, but I always trot this one out when there's a thread about Merrington. During the Arsenal v Saints game just prior to the 2003 FA Cup final (a second string Saints side lost 6-1) Dave spent the whole commentary referring to Giovani van Bronckhorst as 'van Brockenhurst'! My fav bit of Merrington philosophy today was, when assessing Saints' chances of promotion before the game, he said that 'they've got half of the loaf, they now have to show that they want that whole loaf'.
  4. Believe me, I am no fan of the ‘compensation culture’; I see this as a moral issue. If you bought a breakdown policy from the AA or Green Flag, and then 3 years later found out that if you had broken down on a rainy night in the middle of nowhere, they would’ve had no intention whatsoever of coming out to recover you, would you be happy just to get your monthly payments back, plus a little bit of interest (a proportion of which you could have earned anyway if they hadn’t taken your money under false pretences)? Personally I would be a bit cross at being ripped off and treated like a mug and would want some recompense for their fraud. The scenario I describe in the original post is exactly the same principle, isn’t it?
  5. Thanks to all who took time to reply, especially saintsisthesouth for his offer of further help. However, I have now had it confirmed that despite Barclay's clear fraud, the FSA guidelines say that all they are required to do is pay back what they stole plus a bit of interest. It seems that the powers that be are determined to give the banks an easy ride on this.
  6. Like many, my father in-law was mis-sold Personal Protection Insurance on a loan he took out with Barclays a few years ago. He has been through the claim process and has had a letter from Barclays basically saying 'we are very sorry, we'll pay back what we conned you out of and add a bit of interest. This is our final offer'. The thing is, my Father in-law was self-employed when he was told he had to take out the PPI as a condition of the loan. This meant - by Barclays own admission - that the insurance would never have paid out had he tried to claim on it. He was knowingly sold a product not fit for purpose; they dress it up as 'mis-selling', but I can't see that it is anything other than blatant fraud. I strongly feel that Barclay's should be made to pay an element of compensation for knowingly defrauding my Father in-law out of £700+. However, all advice I can find on the web seems to suggest that people affected by PPI 'mis-selling' should aim purely to get their money back, plus a bit of interest. Would my In-laws be wasting their time persuing extra compensation through the FSA Ombudsman? Grateful for any opinions/similar experience.
  7. A joke at Pompey's expense is at 17:40 on Radio 4's 'The Now Show' (iPlayer link below) http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b017mz41/The_Now_Show_Series_35_Episode_4/
  8. Appleton is only 35 - Kanu's old enough to be his Dad!
  9. Case Closed. Thanks to Saint_Jonny, Turkish and El palo. Fitting that it was Graham Baker who scored one, I was at the game today with his brother in law!
  10. Thanks smackalec. i know someone who has this book. I'll text them at a more sociable time - unless someone else can come up with the goods?! I'm sure Steve Moran scored one.
  11. Took my 5 yr old to his first game today, so feeling a bit nostalgic. Coincidently, my first game was also a 4-0 home win, against Leicester in the 80/81 season. I still remember so well walking into the Archers Rd end and seeing the Dell pitch for the first time, while the 'Big Match' theme played on the PA and not believing that I was actually that close to the genuine super star that was Kevin Keegan. Anyway, point of my post is that although the magic of the internet has just let me order the programme from that day, I can't find anywhere who Saints' scorers were - can anyone help? Cheers
  12. Does anyone know how you go about getting a message read out at half time at St Marys? Taking my nipper to his first ever game tomorrow and I thought it might make it a bit more special if he hears his name over the PA.

    Lou Reed

I take on board and appreciate all you say about Dylan - I'm just a casual fan of his and certainly not an authority. My comment was based on the opinion of a friend who IS a massive fan, but tells me that his live shows are very hit and miss where he can sometimes barely be bothered to toss out every third line. There is a clip on YouTube of him doing 'Like a Rolling Stone' at Finsbury Park recently that bears this out. I can understand his reluctance to just roll out the crowd pleasing 'big hits', but if you're going to do them, you may as well do them properly! I think Reed and Dylan should take a leaf out of Neil Young's book with regard to live performance by the old and infirm!

    Lou Reed

I lost interest in Lou Reed years ago. He seems to think that his 'living legend' status justifies the ticket price on its own. A shame that someone with such a great back catalogue can't be arsed to play them properly. I saw the Velvet Underground re-union tour back in the early 90's and it was really bad, mainly due to Reeds refusal to sing the songs properly. Dylan has the same contempt for his fans by all accounts.
  15. Anyone know if there is a quick and easy piece of freeware available that will allow me to rip a DVD soundtrack and convert it to MP3? I want to put a live concert DVD onto an audio CD. I have DVD Shrink - will that help? Cheers
  16. There is an article on the Pompey Official Website by bankrupt ex goalie Alan Knight, detailing his life's downward spiral since retiring from the game. In it, he offers the following advice: “People should avoid getting dodgy loans from sharks and money lenders"
  17. Robbie Keane - Prem career going nowhere, might fancy dropping down to a Championship team with a chance of promotion (if wages were right!)
  18. Eh? who is suggesting that any one individual buys £100M worth of lottery tickets? That would clearly be ridiculous.
  19. I'd never knock Comic Relief and I'm really pleased that they raised £74M. However, the fact that people in the UK spend more than £100M EACH AND EVERY WEEK on lottery tickets puts the £74M raised in to a bit of perspective. The good old British public are still, in general, far more interested in getting fabulously rich over night than helping out their fellow human being.
  20. Does anyone have any episodes of the 60s Batman TV series (with Adam West as Batman) in digital form? These are not available on official DVD release, apparently due to a complex copyright/legal dispute. The film spin-off of the TV series is available on DVD and my 4year old loves it, hence me wanting to get hold of some episodes of the TV show. If anyone can help I’d of course pay for postage and DVD costs. Thanks.
  21. I always get my other half a chocolate orange with superficial damage.
  22. Just listened to Cotterill interview on iplayer. Presenter warns about him swearing and then when they play the interview, they beep out at the wrong part - about a second after he says the word 'b***ard'! good old Solent!
  23. 'Council bods' were removing the 'This is a death trap' grafitti when I passed the boards on my way to work this morning. Incidently, I agree that the boarding is daft and will surely cause more accidents than they avoid. Having said that, you would hope that some sort of risk analysis was done before they went up.
  24. Pompey game today postponed - that won't help with the cash flow.

    Thai food

I second the King & I in the High Street. Been going there for years. Food always tastes really fresh and you can see the kitchens where your food is being prepared, which is always reassuring. Has anyone tried the takeaway in St James' Road, Shirley, called Twisted Cuisine? Oddly, it does both Italian and Thai food.Would be interested ito know what the Thai is like. Beware the chinese takeaway with a 'Thai menu' - Usually just regular chinese dishes with extra chilli added in my experience. Thai food is far more distict than just being 'spicy'!
