I'd have settled at 6, and I think Man Utd had until the cretin Dean invited them to plunder a few more. For all the lamenting the ref etc there's no escaping the fact that the remaining players afterthe sending off made this a training ground exercise for Utd.

Trouble is the Ings people use as a yardstick is the fit and firing on all cylinders one from his good spell, mainly 2020 prior to injury. Not sure from his early days with us, or the often injured/coming back from injury Ings, or the 'going through the motions' at the end of last season version would offer significantly better, or enough to turn down £25/30m.

Might be best not to pack your rainbow laces though.

"leg over" in the penalty area - definitely a red card, in fact indecent assault like that in a public place used to carry a custodial sentence.

One previously mentioned character , Steve Cooper, now back in the game. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58604822

Some repetition here, but did find a goal against Saints I think (2.51 - Milton Road end, Jimmy Gabriel seen in defence).

This is worth viewing, not only for Greaves goals, but the piches etc. Visual quality isn't great but the commentary much better than the muppets they role out now

No 'top knots' , leggings (although Keith Weller did wear stockings at one point in the 1970's). Players didn't need an arm full of tattoos either.

I'm normally with you on this, and am not a fan of having just shortarse strikers. But I do think AA has something about him and will turn out a useful purchase. As someone else has said though he's not a target man and shouldn't be judged against say Pelle.

When does "obstruction" become a 'body check' as it used to be called, which was a foul ? Shielding the ball is permitted, but that probably changes where there is contact.

At this point I felt he often tried to live up to the expectation of the puppet image. Good football review show though, better than the crap served up now with the 'pundits'. Mind you the delicate types now who want to be offended by anything on someone else's behalf would be calling for him to be axed nowadays with some of his quips and comments.

Is sad to hear this, he was part of the 'football establishment' when I got into the sport, late 1960's, quite revered at the time. Older relatives said he was unlucky not to play in 1966. I enjoyed his spell on On The Ball, then Saint & Greavsie, although towards the end of it he seemed to become a bit of a self-parody. Certainly one of he all time greats. Yes, know what you mean, sad seeing the names you were in awe of many years ago, and looked up to, disappearing.

If the one before us was v Spurs, as their heir first in forty, then the previous one to that might be when we beat them at St Mary's during the lockdown.

The one I was thinking of was away to Derby.

Seem to remember Paul Jones conceding a similar goal to that once.

Looks pretty clear to me Jeremy, even allowing for the "sort of".

"Build a team round Redmond" - one of the most inconsistent players in the squad. No further comment required.

A new level of stupidity Perhaps no surprise given your username (chosen with a view to simply wind up).

When you look at how much Everton paid for Gray, who I'd regard as a Redmond MkII, easy to see why some are envious. Agree that both Gray and Townsend are inconsistent and not as great as some will make out but is it too much to expect a little burst of form from Redmond occasionally rather than a good season 3 or 4 years ago ? Perhaps though his sub appearance at Newcastle was his burst of form for this season.

Was my view on signing him, and one good season aside - which IIRC drew a new contract - he's maintained the same level most of the time with us, and doesn't look like changing.
-
Hear what you say, but I think the general view is that Bielsa has a bit too much about him and will adjust his sides and selections as circumstances dictate. Mind you, he is also regarded as a bit of a loose cannon so not sure how he'd handle the critiscism, and if he'd walk away if the going got choppy.

My brain is now in McCalliog overdrive, so one other distant memory - was it against Wolves, and McCalliog the Wolves penalty taker, c 1970 or 71 whose penalty and retake were saved by Eric Martin?

Glad someone else recalls the 'popularity' ! I think he arrived with a good reputation from a big club having been part of Tommy Docherty's first phase rebuild but then fell down the pecking order with the arrival on the scene of some youngsters (Daly, Hill, Coppell etc) who were blitzing their wat through Division 2 (as it was then). Think he had a good career at Wolves and had been part of the Scotland team that beat England at Wembley 3-2 in 1967. All in all, pretty good pedigree. I think some of my older relatives felt he was 'living off of that' pedigree at The Dell, and felt he was on a par with Channon (no one was in those days), and Osgood, but had seldom shown it on the pitch. Bit harsh really because if anyone, despite their sublime talent, spent several months 'dining out' on reputation it was Osgood, although his regular deft flicks and touches were enough to keep the critics (without an internet to vent on and whip up a shit storm) at bay. All were absolute heroes in the end though. As for his looks, its remarkable when you look back at the 60's heroes how so many just looked as if they'd fallen out of a Carnaby photo shoot, none moreso than Bobby Moore of course (Jack Charlton on the other hand often looked as if he'd left the Miners Welfare CIU Club in Ashington at closing time). Hair normally groomed well for the day, sideburns in the late 60's. Not a nose or ear stud in site, and never an arm full of tattoos.

I watched some of the highlights again recently, and it brought home to me that McCalliog also played a great through ball to Channon for chance in the first half. May come as a surprise to some but McCalliog didn't win over the Dell crowd that easily, and was probably second to Hugh Fisher as a scapegoat when the MF didn't fire as hoped. I think fans knew the sort of pass and talent he was capable of (as shown in the cup run) but it didn't happen often enough. Think his part in the FA Cup run won him a reprieve for most though.

Nailed on I'd have thought.
