I thought he looked a quality player. Really looking forward to seeing more of him this season. Tackling was excellent and very hard to shake off the ball.
-
Gazzaniga has the potential to become Saints first choice goalkeeper.
-
That was a cracking strike! Isgrove looking really good too! I thought McQueen was the one more likely to break through, but it looks like there could be another surprise.
-
He has potential, but yet to show he's a top Premier league player. Hopefully Targett will prove to be a better player and he'll not get much time in the first team. On the minus side, I guess that means we won't be getting Rojo, which is most disappointing :-(

The statement was almost exactly the same as for Lallana in length. No "The club would like to thank.." or anything else once again, so indicating the club's not happy with his attitude.

How many more signings do you think we'll make ?
ExSt Peter Saint replied to Saints boy in Leeds's topic in The Saints
When Lovren goes we will be very weak in central defence. Apart from that, we have a decent first eleven, but would be only a couple of injuries away from having to throw half of the U21s in there (no matter how good they are, it's too many, too quickly). We need another LB, but I like the idea that they could cover other positions, too - either CB or midfield. Unless Stephens or Turnbull look capable of stepping up and providing real quality competition to Fonte & Yoshida, we need 2 x CBs (although if one is also LB, that could be ok) In midfield, we could do with someone who will deliver a few more goals if Morgan leaves, but are very well stocked there otherwise. Up front I can't see Mayuka playing a big role this season and Gallagher still looks like he might struggle to deliver consistently, so we need another striker to add competition and someone else to add quality and pace out wide to supply Pelle with crosses. I make that 5-7 depending on who leaves and the versatility of who comes in. -
It depends who we sign. If we sign some of the players we're rumoured to be in for: Forster Rodwell Redmond Ings They could all develop into England players. If JRod is back to full fitness and form, he looks a good option and Clyne must be one of the best players not to have gone - far better than Johnson or Phil Jones in that position! Chambers is also better than the current incumbents, but I don't see how we can have two RBs both playing for England when we will be rotating them. I think JWP needs a bit more time to mature before he's ready to start for us let alone be an England international. If anyone else breaks into the team and impresses enough to be considered, we'll be having a very good season again. I know everyone's ****ed off with our best players being tapped up and sold because they've played so well, but I'd rather that every summer than relegation battles and sub-standard football at St Mary's every week.

If we're playing 3-5-1-1, I'd go for: Boruc Chambers Fonte Yoshida Clyne Morgan Davis Wanyama Targett Tadic Gallagher I can't see Lovren or Osvaldo playing for us again. If we play 4-2-3-1, at the moment, we could field: Boruc Clyne Fonte Yoshida Targett Wanyama Morgan Davis Ramirez Tadic Gallagher subs from: Gazzaniga, Chambers, Stephens, Hooiveld, Turnbull, JWP, Reed, Isgrove, Rowe, Sinclair

I think we will need at least 6 new players. Even with academy players stepping up, that won't cover the gaps we have in the squad. We were already light in a few areas and I really don't want to be flirting with relegation at all! The sooner we get our targets in, the better they can integrate. If our scouts have done their job, we know who we need, so it's only negotiations that are holding things up.
-
It depends whether Fonte will start. It's a bit early to know who's likely to be in RK's starting line up this season. Cork, Morgan or Davis might be a decent shout if all still here and playing regularly.
-
If we lose all the players rumoured to be on the way out: Morgan Lovren Ramirez Rodriguez Osvaldo That would leave us very light and forced into playing a lot of the youth team straight away. My feeling is that not all of those will leave and we will buy some top players to replace those who've left already. In recent years, each season we've had a couple more young players establish themselves, so time to step up McQueen and Targett, plus Reed and Gallagher need to get more game time. I'm, not too worried yet and I think there's a lot more positive news to come.

Should Ronald Koeman and coaching team quit Twitter?
ExSt Peter Saint replied to saint lard's topic in The Saints
To all of the people who think he'll respond to your tweets, he won't. His twitter is for broadcast, rather than conversation. He looks like he does them himself, so there's not a PR person on the end of it to respond to every tweet. -
I'd rather that Stephens was given a game at CB than Hooiveld if the need arises again. I'd rather one of the young attacking players gets a go rather than Guly from the bench. Other than that, I'm not sure who they youngsters are going to play ahead of. They should be in there on merit if they are good enough.
-
It really feels as thought the players coming in are ready now, unlike when we were struggling at the bottom of the championship with youngsters being thrown in to sink with a ship going down. Hope we all still feel as positive at the end of the season.

Our Starting 11 of Academy Products Ambition
ExSt Peter Saint replied to robdevil7's topic in The Saints
Chambers, Stephens, Targett, Shaw, JWP, Reed, Lallana, Isgrove, Gallagher could all appear in a match day squad. That would be 9 out of 16! -
Another games we deserved to win, but didn't would be the gloomy version. Great performance, though and I'd rather have academy lads out there playing like that than expensive prima donnas to be honest. Shaw was superb going forward, but both Arsenal goals were scored from sloppy defending down the left - not that it was Luke there at that time.

2014 Saints related predictions......
ExSt Peter Saint replied to Glasgow_Saint's topic in The Saints
Saints finish 9th in the league and don't qualify for Europe Gaston will either leave on loan or be sold We splash big money on another CB (never seem to be able to produce good enough from academy so none of the young CBs in the squad now ever start a game) Jay Rod finishes the season as our top scorer Shaw stays despite concerted efforts and large offers from Chelsea (as do other young stars we want to keep) Sam Gallagher will score a few goals and start challenging for regular first team action ahead of Lambert/Osvaldo JWP will get an England call up after the world cup -
I really don't get the people saying it's a good result. We were so much better and but for a freak goal, it would have been a routine win. I can't really criticise any of the starting 11 today, as they all dealt with the conditions pretty well overall. Ward-Prowse was my MOTM, but Wanyama was close behind and I was really impressed how Shaw dealt with the physical side of things. I love the way the players all seem comfortable swapping positions and covering for each other - nearly total football at times. I think that for all the possession and great build up play, we do need to create a few more chances, though. Stoke are a horrendous side to watch and I feel sorry for my in-laws who support them. Even the fans seem to be fed up with watching the crud served up as football there every week and the atmosphere there is no longer anything special. I think they could be in trouble this year.
-
Funniest comment I heard from their fans while walking away from the ground was "Thought we played quite well today, just didn't know what to do with the ball when we had it". If that's quite well, I dread to think what they're normally like.
-
Lambert is well capable of playing in the hole behind the front players and links play very well. I think Lallana and JWP should also be able to do that, but it's all about the instructions and what they're told to do by the manager. Gaston certainly doesn't seem to have his price tag guaranteeing him a place as much as VW or Osvaldo, though and on his day, that's his best role and he has the talent to make a real difference.

The Guardian predict 14th place finish for Saints
ExSt Peter Saint replied to Toon Saint's topic in The Saints
14th would definitely be a disappointment, but I agree that it's going to be very tight and so long as we're not down at the bottom, there isn't a huge amount of difference in finishing 9th and 14th if it's as tight as it was last year. I think it's unlikely we'll really be challenging to get into the top 8 unless some real quality is added before the season starts. We'll have to be very lucky with injuries to be consistently good with the squad we have. -
Saints: "2nd best fans in the Premier League"...
ExSt Peter Saint replied to trousers's topic in The Saints
I don't think hurling abuse helps the team much. When the ground's rocking with a positive atmosphere, it does inspire. I don't think that's necessarily reflected in this "league, though. -

An awful idea to mix football and politics. She had no time for the game and I'll refrain from adding my thoughts on what she did to the country as this is a football forum, but if forced to choose I would not honour a minute's silence to her.
