  1. Didn't Portsmouth used to be in the County of Southampton?
  2. See Eastleigh Boro Council, under leader Keith House, are underwriting a £35m expansion of the Rose Bowl. Fair enough and good to see improved facilities for cricket fans. However wasn't this the Keith House who wanted nothing to do with football at Stoneham. Double standards methinks
  3. Remember these from my past paticularly a trip to a 3rd Rd game at Hull in mid 60's with train leaving Soton Docks station at midnight and getting into a freezing and foggy Hull about 7am .Lost 1-0 and not back until 3/4am Sunday morning then up at 6am to do Sunday paper round in pouring rain. Happy Days!! Anyway Football Specials are back on the Agenda. Good news 1st Class carriages so comfort guaranteed Bad news - no booze allowed. Straw poll - Anyone interested in jaunts to Midlands & beyond. Need minimum of 250/300 to make it a goer
  4. Baj Sounds like good news Amazing you got a GP appointment so quickly The NHS is not that bad after all
  5. Baj, how's the boy?

    MBE

I read somewhere that Alan Knight, the ex Pompey 'keeper, was awarded a MBE in 2001 and I think Steve Bull may have been similarly rewarded for his time at Wolves Now I have no objection to this as we should all support club loyalty where ever that may be However this brings in to sharp focus the constant overlooking of Matt Le Tizz for a gong, a man who achieved far more in the game than Alan Knight and does lots around the local community. Any one know what the procedure is to put Matt's name forward? Separately what about the reported gifts of £150k watches being given to the poorly paid Man City players!!
  7. Pulis/Forecast (5 yr deal?)/Gasmi plus Ryan Smith (Millwall Res) Molyneaux and Schneiderlin (£1m when we were supposedly broke) I can only guess these were inspired signings by our dear departed Chairman rather than whoever was Head Coach at the time. Can you imagine Mr Pulis turning up for training and the Head Coach thinking.. what on earth am I going to do with this joker..
  8. I very much doubt it. He seems to be an astute business man In fact he would be far better squandering/investing £25m + in or esteemed football club than sinking it into the QE2 Perhaps Pompey's prospective new owner might like to buy the ship and donate it to Soton in a gesture of goodwill. He could make a grand entrance direct from Dubai and get dropped off at the Palmerston Forts!!
  9. Great in theory BUT where will it go? Altho Soton Docks is struggling a bit during the recession every one of its deep water berths is used by regular customers. Even if a berth was to be made available ABP would want a fair amount of berth fees. Bearing in mind millions of UK residents have been on cruie ships, one visit is the best you can hope for, and then what? The ship is not really cut out for a hotel or conference centre. Who would buy the ship at say £25-£50m, pay for the internal improvements and, more importantly, pay for the upkeep as it rusts in our damp climate. Having said all that the vessels engines could provide a fair amount of electricity into the UK grid but the green brigade would soon be on this case. Would love to be proved wrong on this but cant see a business case being made
  10. Baj What Mr Tickle says is correct and you have done the right thing in seeing your GP asap Hopefully all will be fine in a day or two. However if the groin ache does persist do ask your GP to consider a X Ray. My lad had persistent groin ache which was variously described as a virus/growing pains/hip irritation until an X ray gave the correct diagnosis
  11. Check out a condition called Perthes Disease. Primarily found in young lads. Groin pain is a symptom. Caused by referred pain from the hip joint which flattens out and doesnt bond correctly with the femur. It is a very curable condition, unlikely to involve operations or drugs, generally a few months in a plaster cast which takes a little getting used to.; An X Ray will be required to check out the condition of the hip joint Hope all goes well whatever the diagnosis
  12. Link from ticket info leads to a comment from Mark Wotte!! Bit out of date now!!
  13. The container port recently ordered some Liebherr cranes so some commercial link but small beer in the overall context of the Liebherr business Think the cranes were built in Ireland
  14. Nick, fair point but surely the purchase of a TV would be looked upon as a consumable with no expectation of a return. I guess, for a businessman of Herr Liebherr's standing, shelling out £15m would be classed as an investment and there would have to be a return. Not many businessmen are philanthropic Supplementary question, will we be graced with the presence of Messrs Askham, Wiseman, Richards and others of the old guard next season? Will also be interesting to hear what Lawrie Mac and Leon Crouch have to say on the takeover.
  15. First of all it is great news that someone with the apparent werewithal and business acumen of Markus Leibherr should be interested in Saints rather than the ragtag alternatives. However what attracts a 61 yr old man, with no loyalty to this area and no interest in footy, to SFC? Reportedly he has shelled out £13m plus a likely investment of at least £2m+ to strenghen a very weak squad. Based on a reasonable return of 5% he needs to earn £750k a year to justify his initial investment and hope that better times will increase the value of the club and see a decent capital appreciation when he comes to sell, as undoubtedly he will. To me the good thing here is that the new owner does appear to have decent business skills and, hopefully, fully understands the immediate requirement to build bridges with the fan base. Having said that I find the return of Andy Oldknow rather strange. Most posters here are committed fans and hopefully will provide full support to the new regime. The real trick is to gain the support of the floating and/or disillusioned fans. It is a shame Hants Radio is not around to help stimulate this interest. Great news today. Let's enjoy it without setting our sights too high for the moment. Us supporters have had to take a great deal of ridicule. Quite a few of those previously laughing at our predicament are now rather jealous. Good times!!
  16. Out of interest, does anyone know know how long our friends from the dark side have been training at Stoneham Lane? I wonder if the change of air this side of the county may have coincided with their recent better fortunes. I reckon it must be 5 years or so since they moved into the hallowed ground of Southampton University
  17. I played for Farsley Celtic many moons ago in the Yorkshire League. Bobby & Jack's other brother also played for them at the time. Bit of a big buggar as I remember him
  18. So many Nottm Forest 3-3 in 1963 Wolves 9-3 in 1966 Ipswicn 7-1 in the cup about 1965? Leeds 5-4 in the League Cup. Floodlights went out. Huxford in goal Charlton 1-0 the last home game in the year we were first promoted to Div 1 (V nervous game needed the points) 6-3 v man utd 3-2 v Arsenal (mattys goal - so emotional) so many more....
  19. Four random questions: 1. Where did the end of season collection money go? Has it been given to the club to pay expenses or in suspense somewhere? 2. Does the disappearance of the banners along West Quay Road have any significance. Presume term agreement expired? Shame looked good. 3. Will Anthony Pulis ever play for the Saints or will he join Perry Groves as a figment of our collective imagination? 4. Can all this recent misery be traced back to the fans disquiet when Rupert arranged to get Hoddle back? (Only time I can think of when Rupes listened to the fans- via Andy Cowans)
  20. i like them Not cheap but a delicate texture Was also persuaded to try some wild alaskan salmon from the Sainsbury fresh fish counter. Not as good as the farmed stff imo
  21. Heres hoping
  22. Actually this has been proposed and a site allocated for a CHP plant up in the W Dks providing power and also hot water to Millbrook Estate However cost of setting up and operating is quite high and needs to be amortised over 20+ years. Unfortunately the prospective operator has yet to find a renewable power source provider (such as Biomass) which can guarantee supply for 5 yrs let alone 20. May change in future, of course
  23. Top Gun Quite right and I was trying to explain why, in a factual way, that particular example is unlikely to work. Fill in some background details and all that. You get my drift!!
  24. Hutchinson Whampoa re into container terminals. They currently own Felixstowe and are spending money extending their facilities there. Their main rival Dubai Ports own 51% of the Soton Container Terminal. HW are unlikely to have any interest in Soton
  25. V unlikely in my view. Queen Mary 2 struggles to fill up on most Transatlantic crossings and the seaon is fairly short. Who will market the ship? Needs a big company to obtain critical mass. A one ship operation will never work. Where will it cruise outside of the New York/Europe season. Upper berths are fine. Lower down, the ship very much shows its age. Additionally there are new SOLAS regs coming into being in 2010 which will require a shed load of money thrown at the ship to make it suitable for passenger operations. That's why Carnival sold the ship. Shame but a non story
