Liverpool 4 - Saints 0 Post match Reaction
Saint Fan CaM replied to davefizzy14's topic in The Saints
VAR not looking at Ings pen shout is strange at best, but then Longs grapple incident was also bizarre by not being given...almost like someone was evening things up after not giving the first deliberate error which gave Pool the advantage effectively. Fact is though, industry and intent do not win games of football by themselves - consistent quality, judgement and finishing in the final third invariably do and Liverpool have all that in spades, like it or not. Saints played very well indeed and if we keep that level going in future games then we’ll end up better than last season. Especially when we have a proper RB and JWP and Armstrong back in midfield. Hojberg is a dilemma - there’s some great aspects to his game, but he does seem unaware of what’s going on around him sometimes so gets caught napping and good teams capitalise. Same with Redmond, Boufal and to some extent Romeu and this can often be the difference between winning and losing. Ultimately not too worried about this result...it was on the cards and I’m more hacked off with shipping four goals TBH. Looking forward to the Spurs game Weds now. -
Jacob Maddox on loan with view to permanent signing in summer

Hook, line and huge sinker! LOL Jeez, some people just need to take a chill pill or ten. LOL -
Cedric Soares - Official: Loaned to Arsenal

Time will tell, but I’ve got a sneaky feeling that he’ll be our next Bertrand. Unless it goes all ‘Toby t*ts up’ and we don’t get to keep him because a bigger offer comes in the summer. -

Difficult to disagree, however I did call it that KWP came to us with the promise that he would get a start. -
Good luck and thanks Yoshi...a true pro. Yes, he was not in the same league as VVD or TA, but he did have enough quality about him to make a stab at PL football...more so than other CB’s who have ended up relegated.

Jacob Maddox on loan with view to permanent signing in summer

Think this might be a possible Hojberg replacement if he goes in the summer or an understudy to Armstrong perhaps as he looks more no.10 material? Overall a good loan IMO. -
Spurs interested in PEH according to SSN

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave in the summer, although I would not welcome it. There’s much to be said for consistency and to once again send out a message of “we’re Saints we’ll sell whoever we please”, smacks of a club locked in a slow death dance. -

Exactly this. And you know that the usual culprits will be swooning over him if we win the next game he plays in, to then turn on him when he makes his first error. #fickle -
Not a bad point, but equally injuries expose the lack of quality in the depth of the squad. A key reason for the uplift in form is Ralph finding the right balance in formation with the best players in the squad, but once this is disrupted we look ordinary again. JWP being slotted in at RB is the best example of this. KWP will help with issue, although the big question is how long it takes for him to get match fit.
-
Difficult one. How long do you keep faith with a striker that’s just not scoring or more worrying, not getting into positions to score? Now is not the right time to sell IMO and to place a condition of the full sale on Leeds gaining promotion was certainly a deal breaker. If another bid comes in the summer I think I would be sorely tempted to find another solution, but my feeling is Saints will give him another season with Ralph.
-
Don’t think we’ll be taking any points from Klippity Klopp this weekend with a weakened team. A draw would be remarkable, but I reckon on 3-0 to the bin dippers.
-
And more so Armstrong returning to the team I would argue. Regarding KWP, his decision to come here is likely to be based on being a first choice starter (why warm the bench at SMS when you can do that at Spuds?) and I think that’s what has effectively allowed the release of Cédric early. Personally I feel there is a risk that he’s not at the same standard as Cédric, but who knows...he may be a player that reacts well to Ralph and becomes a star for us ala VVD? Think the squad does need some fresh blood now.
-
I’ll reserve judgement until I see him play for us under Ralph’s system and with the rest of a rejuvenated Saints side. Looks like no lose situation if the loan reports are true. Who knows, at 22 he could develop into a significantly decent RB for us.
-
Was it Rogers that took some of our lot to Anfield or am I getting muddled? Perhaps he knows something we don’t (!). Sure JV made a mistake against Palace, but come on, most players do and we kept a clean sheet. If there’s little aerial threat in opposition, JV could be considered good enough for a mid-table Prem side given the relatively low price. I think if we are looking to offload it will be for reasons not connected to performance alone.
-
Not sure the club would see this as the right move and especially at £15m. Think £25m sale to a Prem rival is closer value and anyway it’s more likely we see Yoshi go before Jannick. Do we believe this story from the Mail anyway?

Palace 0-2 Saints. Wild celebration reaction thread.

Armstrong my MOTM...was an incredible performance. But to be fair when the team play like that we look superb. 9th - who would have thunk it?! -
Wow, wow , wow. Incredible performance and to see out the game like that after the Wolves wobble says much about how Ralph has galvanised the team. Armstrong my MOTM - was everywhere...bossed midfield and gave us an extra strike presence. Special shout for JWP also...he did very well at RB.
-
Reckon Palace had a plan to crock Cédric....where have all their attacks come from? Yep through Zaha. Reckon JWP said something like “you’re not getting through me either you flake”. Just need to wind him up a bit more, but make sure there’s no chance of him taking a dive in the area. Gotta say, we’re doing much much better than I thought we would. COYR.
-
I don’t have a problem with Obifemi getting the start over Adams - at least he’s scored and this will be a game where we struggle to form an attack, let alone score. Can see Zaha having a field day. 2-0.
-
2-0 Palace. We’re looking tired from all the pressing and they’ve got a better squad. Plus looks like we’ll be missing Bednarek.
-
Absolutely. It has been made reasonably clear that Ralph is looking at full back and centre half positions being strengthened - last time I looked we have two FBs so I think most would think it not unreasonable to believe we’re looking for 2-3 players rather than the possible one. Even if it were two and we ignored the risk of Ings getting nobbled, you can’t help but feel we’re going for the cheap option once again, meaning no lessons learned.
-
Can’t argue with that to be fair, but there must be better out there now surely?
-
Have to say the tune has subtlety changed from Ralph and the Board from 2-3 players inbound to just talking about one in. I get there are budgetary limits...why would there not be? But to think that we can ride our luck without quality backup in key positions (e.g. Ings) or indeed improving the squad by buying in better quality than we have, is verging on the reckless. Having said that, Ralph has a real problem keeping the squad players on board when not playing...even senior players such as Yoshida and Long. Tough job, but one I’m confident he can deal with.

Which one player would be the worst to lose to injury now?

Ings and does the Pope wear a funny hat? -
I’ve not been impressed in the slightest with Adams, however I have to admit I can see signs of him finding his pace and linking better with the midfield and Ings. Perhaps he does have it in him to kick on and get a goal to move to the next level.
