I don't think the legislation was in place in the 70s to combat things like verbal racism, but more on a practical level with things like welfare and housing provision, employment, etc. Whereas the laws governing age of consent were already in place (give or take the lowering of the age of consent for gay men in more recent years). I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong here.

Fair point I find that Christmas/Xmas is pretty much what you make it. The religious aspect is fairly easy to avoid if you don't have family commitments in that direction.

How sick do people get from your spunks? With mine there's usually a couple of dry retches, but they keep the substance down.

I love it. I bloody love it. Time off, food, booze, happy people, all my old friends come back home for a few days, it's great. The only thing I don't like is the music. But I don't watch much telly and I'll do my shopping online, so hopefully I'll avoid the worst of that.

There's a lot of truth in this, IMO. There's a student union vibe to many bars now, that pretty much invites competetive drinking. I don't think a cafe culture is ever going to take off here. We have, for hundreds of years, been a North European drinking culture and I can't see that changing.
