  1. Yeah, that's my understanding of it too. I'm of the opinion that it would be more fitting to play a game of football (particularly against Everton) on that day. But it's not me who's been bereaved. The article RonManager posted above is interesting, regarding mass displays of grief and emotion. It's a poorly written article and much of it is wrong but the point is worth discussing. How long do we continue to publically grieve after a tragedy and at what point does that start to be more a show for someone else than a genuine emotional response? I think in this case there is a show being put on, but given the circumstances and the ongoing campaign for justice, perhaps a show is required? Complex issue, f'sure, and best not to broach it by shouting the odds.
  2. Exactly this. Although the more extreme reactions/death threats make you wonder if this is less about compassion than partisanship for some LFC fans. It's easy to see how fans who stand behind an abuser rather than the man he racially abused, and who offer to kill someone who (is perceived to have) disrespected their grief, could be viewed as being slightly tunnel-visioned in their support of the team. Mustn't tar them all with that brush though. Of course they will want to commemorate the tragedy. Possibly a more fitting commemoration would be at a football match though..?
  3. Tee-hee!
  4. Can anyone else smell cheesy, pustular old c o ck?
  5. This.
  6. You see, I think both of those men can be good pundits. When they really put the effort in (and let's face it, they should do, it's their bloody job) Hansen can tell you things about the art of defending that only a genuinely world class player can, and Lawro can be very funny and cut to the heart of the inflated pomp of modern football. Trouble is they're both so often lazy, underprepared and cruising. In that mode Hansen just throws out cliches and Lawrenson is all half-arsed, leaden sarcasm. They could both take a leaf out of Lee Dixon's book IMO. Shearer, however, there is no hope for.
  7. Chiles used to be alright on the BBC. I think he's the type of presenter who needs a few minutes to have a comfortable chat. On ITV they don't give you that, you've just got a couple of minutes at halftime to summarise what you've just seen. Any nameless twonk could do that. ITV bought something they didn't have a use for. They're a perfect fit for people like Steve Ryder or Ray Stubbs; just sit in the chair, chair the discussion and introduce the next piece, no personality required. I like Colin Murray. He's a good presenter. He facilitates the discussion and can think on his feet. Lineker's good at his job too. Just a shame he has to work with those lazy qunts as pundits. In fact I think he and Murray should swap roles. Lineker would be fantastic leading the more in depth, football discussion on MOTD2. Murray would be just the tonic against those tedious, platitude-spouting, lazy, complacent, licence-fee-absorbing spongers 'Al' and Alan.
  8. I've a feeling once WHam have played their next two games against Leeds and Boro, we might be looking at a two-horse race with Reading.
  9. This. Make sure everybody has a good cry. Then this as they carry me out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geT2bYzvLcw
  10. It's been all downhill since Spacemen 3...
  11. This thread is beautiful in a thousand ways.
  12. It doesn't seem to matter outside of the England national team. And even that's a recent development. 4 or 5 years ago nobody really cared. I think it became an issue around the time the armband was given to Beckham, not that I particularly blame him. But the media-cult that built up around him seemed to absorb the notion of captaincy into itself, meaning that subsequent captains are viewed as Heirs to His Greatness, and are thus subject to the same hyper-scrutiny/criticism that was pioneered with Beckham. It's a shame this has become another of the many media driven side-shows which are allowed detract and distract from the simple joy of International football, particularly in England.
  13. Oren Ambarchi - Audience of One. Quietly intense, minimal electronic drone-jazz (w/occasional crooning). A beautiful, personal album from someone who can often be vibrantly abstract. Another dinger donger.
  14. Taking intoxicants for pleasure, leisure and sacrement is the native tradition of pretty much every culture in the world. A goverment oversteps its remit when it outlaws the private consumption of intoxicants, particularly naturally occurring ones. The only effective intoxicant currently available to the people of this country is alcohol. Can it be any great surprise that people drink too much?
  15. Ital - Hive Mind. S'laaaahrvley. All wonky bisexual dub sounds. Quite Orb in places. This release carries the 'Ringing Dinger' endorsement.

This. The early Lee Perry recordings are cracking though.
  17. I don't think it's anything to do with 'innocent until proven guilty'. This isn't about the FA delivering a judgement on his case, it's a pragmatic approach to attempted success. With the case still pending, and hanging over everyone until after the tournament, it's clearly a massive distraction from the business of doing well in a major tournament. How can he lead the team when half the players are unlikely to respect him? When he's bound to have other things on his mind? And without the captaincy, Capello will be able to drop him based on form without causing too much disruption (which his form thoroughly deserves).
  18. The day after the transfer window seems odd timing...
  19. I was hoping it would be some sort of knockout format Musical Khazi game show.
  20. Odd how?
  21. Sweet. Absolutely sweet. Comfortable victory and P*mpey lose to Millwall. Merry Christmas all! xxx

  24. Me too.
  25. Is it time for this yet? Does anyone still listen to albums? Here's some of mine, anyhow... Rustie - Glass Swords Big bouncy beats and technicolour melodies, just like Mike Paradinas used to make. Contains all of the best pop tunes I've heard this year. Colin Stetson - A New History of Warfare Vol 2: Judges Breathtaking album of solo saxophone minimalist blues. He manages to sound like an entire Steve Reich ensemble on his own. Container - LP Lovely filthy techno sounds that rumble and buzz in a spare room. Walls - Coracle Another wonderful dose of sunrise synth joy to make you feel warm in the wintertime. There's been loads of other good ones, but those are the ones I've listened to the most so by that reckoning they must be my favourites.
