  1. Former Cardiff and Wycombe centre back Roger Johnson is our saviour
  2. Actually, I'm changing my answer to Paul Lambert. Unless they make some good signings quickly they will be in serious trouble
  3. If it's not Poyet then I reckon Allardyce.
  4. Yeah, you can't put too much trust in Goal.com. But Liverpool and Chelsea are the only names I've seen mentioned. With Chelsea sorting left back with Filipe Luis it might just be that lot again...
  5. Rojo would be an absolutely brilliant signing in so many ways. A World Cup finalist!
  6. There is not a hope in hell that we won't have made any more signings before the first day.
  7. Yeah, but it could be more yet
  8. Great, let's get it done
  9. Of course it's worth it. The Premier League should be far more competitive than it is and the odds are stacked horribly against us, but I want my team to compete as high up the pyramid as possible. It would be a crying shame if this is the pattern every summer, though. It's been a privilege to watch this team grow over five years and I hope that Koeman's team can stick together for a few years as well, even if there are one or two departures or changes in management. That's the biggest worry for me, not that doing well might mean doing less well in future. That's an odd way of looking at things in my view.
  10. He very almost went to Lazio, who finished 9th in Serie A last year. The story suggests that the World Cup has raised his stock but at the moment only us and United have been mentioned. If anyone else is sniffing around, I haven't seen it reported.
  11. It's the meaning I'm talking about. It's a small difference but saying he won't go unless a bid is accepted leaves more room for him staying than 'he won't go until a bid is accepted'.
  12. I'd be delighted if we signed De Vrij. Absolutely made up. Obviously United can outgun us but they've got some other high calibre targets. Let's hope they go for one of the others.
  13. Koeman quote from Solent: "No bids accepted for Lovren. He's told me he wants to go, but that won't happen until there's a bid accepted." We can't assume a native Dutch speaker is being precise with his words, but it's still worth noting he said 'until' rather than 'unless'.
  14. Because it was promised that 'the money' (which I assume means most of the money) would be reinvested in the team. I don't think anyone will mind whether we match it exactly, but to raise £80m+ and spend, say, £40m, would be very disappointing. I expect it will be more than that, but then we might raise closer to £100m if Morgan goes.
  15. Yup. He was mismanaged more than anything, which stopped him from shining like he does for Liverpool.
  16. I don't think there's any chance we'd get Nastasic. He was out through injury for most of last year but Pelligrini must be planning to use him. With Lescott gone, Demichelis getting old and no defensive signings on the horizon for them they won't be letting him go. And if they did, it would probably be to a bigger/richer club than us.
  17. A terrific player and great servant. England will miss him.
  18. Did he play in midfield for Swindon? I suppose you've got to find the best position for your potential but it would be useful if he could play at centre half instead...
  19. It's not totally out of the question, actually. That's a nice feeling!
  20. Hmm, Feyenoord to Southampton?
  21. You're not wrong on any count, but every player we bring in will have a far bigger question mark over their head. Lambert I'll give you, but we really, really can't pretend that we wouldn't have rather kept Shaw and Lallana. And Lovren. And Pochettino, for that matter.
  22. Indeed, but we're trading proven quality for potential quality. We all know that the club would have preferred to keep these players.
  23. 'High pressing game' has become a commentator cliche with very little meaning, but I'm sorry to say that all three of those teams press(ed) quite hard. I think the biggest difference is that those teams have more quality on the ball than us, so they don't have to do it that often. Pochettino built fitness and mentality which helped us compete with technically superior teams - we lost the ball far more often than those teams, so had to win it back more often. That's why 'high pressing game' became our thing. As the season went on we got better on the ball, so we didn't have to do it as much. But Spain in their pomp did both: effortless ball retention and pressing beyond what anyone had done before. That's why they were so good!
  24. Will any of that make us a better football team? That's the most important question, and one that we won't be able to answer for a long time yet. But I'm guessing the answer is no.
