I do accept that there is a problem about policing and how decisions are arrived at and the “slippery slope” arguments are clearly a concern, but, in certain circumstances I still think that we should have the right to end our lives with dignity and without have to resort to either suicide or going through a traumatic end of life, if it can be avoided. Coming from someone who knows a lot more about the proposed legislation than most of us, apparently the bill is a lot more watertight and less likely to be able to be challenged in court for the purposes of amendments than other legislation around the world.

As I said, everyone has to find a way of finding the money to pay inheritance tax if they are liable for it. In terms of “grave robbing” as you so colourfully put it, what should farmers be exempt? We all benefit from the NHS, public services etc, should we all pay for it? Not every farmer will be liable for it. Do you have an issue with those with the broadest shoulders taking a bit more of the burden?

People who voted in those who have wrecked the country and voted for Brexit need to own it. Not all are awful people but some are and those now are desperately trying to blame Starmer and Labour for everything despite them only being in power since July. When Labour crash the economy the way Truss did, when Labour give their mates billions of pounds of business contracts on what turns out to be useless crap, when Labour start lying about pretty much everything on a daily basis, then chirp up and have a pop. At the moment Labour have a long way to go before they are in any way comparable to the incompetence that has gone before.

Anyway, was watching Clarkson getting very huffy with the BBC for asking him about his quote 3 years ago that he bought the farm to avoid inheritance tax. He says now that he wanted to by a “shoot” which had the added bonus of not attracting inheritance tax. This is another direct from Clarkson and no mention of buying a “shoot”. “I’ve always seen my farm as many things: a place of great beauty, a fun business and, if I’m honest, a good way of passing my wealth to my children without the taxman getting involved”. I believe that he has put his farm into a trust for his kids so has avoided the taxman anyway.

But the man is Mr Brexit! I know you don’t believe that farmers voted for Brexit but as I have said before, the fields were full of Vote Leave signs where I live in East Kent and stretched over to East Sussex. It’s not a daft point at all. The more people who stand up and say that Brexit is ruining the UK the more chance we have of trying to do something about it. Anyway… I have sympathy for the farmers in the lower end of the scale who will be affected by this, I have sympathy for the fisherman who were screwed by Brexit, I have sympathy for the care workers who do a brilliant job and are paid a pittance, I have sympathy for nurses, I have sympathy for us pensioners who have lost our winter fuel allowance, I have sympathy for those with fixed term mortgages that will end soon and will find their mortgages doubling, I have sympathy for those trying to make ends meet on Universal Credit, I have sympathy for the coal workers and steel workers who have lost their jobs over the years. I could go on. The farmers tell us that they should be the exception but where do you draw the line? Many people can make a case for being an exemption. Life has been very tough for certain people for years. We know that the economy is in a poor state and we know that money needs to be found to rebuild and reinvest. We all need to play our part, including those who have been lucky enough to be exempt for many years.

Yes, which applies to everyone who is liable to pay inheritance tax. I believe this will affect some other businesses too, not just farming.

Farage said that about 50% of farmers voted for Brexit. A survey I saw said 58%. Whatever the figure I would suggest that Brexit has done and is doing far more damage to farmers than this budget. Perhaps they should be protesting about Brexit and pushing for closer ties with the EU?

I don’t know any farmers who send their children to private schools either. The point I was making there was about those who do complaining about having to pay VAT.

As it is most farmers will not have to pay it unless they have assets over £3m, and then they can spread the payments over 10 years. I don’t know about you but I would love to give my kids an inheritance of £3m despite it being liable to tax. The last time I remember the country folk invading London was when fox hunting was banned (something that should have been banned long ago). We were told it was the slippery slope and that fishing would be next to be banned by the “Liberal Elite”. Guess what? It wasn’t and won’t be. I have lived in the country for many years now and hear a lot about how Londoners don’t understand country life. I can tell you that many country folk don’t also understand what is going on outside the shires. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but have a feeling that it won’t be as catastrophic as some would have us believe. Incidentally I do agree that we should be producing more of our own food. Sadly a lot of the land in East Kent is being sold off for vineyards.

There are some people who make a very good living out of farming and there are some who struggle. My point is that you don’t see much sympathy from certain quarters in social media for those on benefits who can’t afford to wear a Barbour or look forward to having. £3m inheritance passed on to them. We are led to believe that this will cripple farmers whereas Labour say it will only affect a small number. I don’t know which is true but am prepared to wait and see rather than just have a go at Labour because I voted for a party who only look after their mates. Serious question. I don’t that this is true is it. The wealthy have done very well out of previous Tory governments. It is not unreasonable if the well to do shoulder some of the pain now is it? I don’t know if it is true, but it apparently will only affect a minority of farmers and Labour are also investing in farming in this budget. Three local farmers have taken to FB to support the march today, all three I know for a fact are minted. One in particular was very comfortably off before he passed away earlier this year but his family now have the benefit. The other two are asset rich in property and land but both still work to “pay the rent”. If they were to sell their assets they would be multi millionaires. I know not all farmers are minted and many work hard for little reward, but not all farmers will be affected by this inheritance tax. I find it interesting to hear that when working class people complain about higher taxation they were told to stop their Netflix subscriptions, get rid of their smart phones, stop vaping and stop going to nail bars. Why doesn’t that apply to farmers, people who send their kids to private schools etc. why should making sacrifices just apply to the poorer in our society? Taxes are already very high but we need more money to rebuild the NHS, public services and infrastructure, all the things that have been starved of cash whilst the previous government looked after the people they liked, to use your analogy. It seem quite reasonable to close tax loopholes does it not? Why should some people benefit from a system when most of our society don’t have that privilege? The inheritance tax is still half of what others pay for those who will have to pay it. If they are going after the people they don’t like they seem to be going about it in a half hearted way.
