trousers Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 I reckon we should put out a second string side for ALL cup competitions this season (including Johnston's Paint Trophy) as we need to put 100% of first team effort into the league and clawing back the -10 points. I know there's an argument that says a good cup run fuels confidence but I'd rather we kept our primary first team players away from the cup games. I suspect a lot of people see the Johnston's Paint Trophy as a potentially easy route to Wem-ber-ley but I see it as a distraction. Thoughts? Tac-tics Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Hmmm not to sure. I honestly think Saints should consider adding the JPT to the cabinet being a new regime a new era. We wont win the league so would be nice to have that trophy. I agree, carling cup for players outside the starting 11.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 Sorry trousers I disagree, I think if we can we should go all out for both, fitness pending of course. Certainly, the League should have priority but a good cup run would do wonders for confidence, and in the latter stages of a cup run we need our best players to push on to the final. The fans and players deserve a trip to Wembley after all we have gone through, so we should put out a strong team for all competitions, 100%. See where you are coming from though, that's just my opinion.
Colinjb Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 The cups are not a priority for me. Even the League Vase has no appeal, even though a trip to Wembley is not unrealistic. It's all about the league, get ourselves established and then push on.

We have a chance of actually winning a cup for once! so we might as well make the most of it.
eharty9 Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 yeah i agree with fielding a weaker team for cups, and remember we don't come in the FA cup at round 3 anymore do we, so thats even more cup games

offix Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 I don't think I agree Trousers. I am fairly confident that we will be able to "maintain" our status in this division, maybe even get a play-off spot. With the finances that will no doubt be made available, and an experienced manager like AP that seems pretty certain to me. But a good cup run would do so much more than just boost confidence; it would put Saints out there as a force to be reckoned with. It would make recruitment for AP so much easier and allow us to attract a better class of player. And that in return would give us a better team for the long haul. We never recovered from that thrashing. You said it - a good cup runs fuels confidence and that is what our whole club (including us fans) has been lacking for 18 months or more. A win is a win is a win - and the more the better
eurosaint Posted 17 July, 2009 Share Posted 17 July, 2009 It really depends on the size of squad we end up with but in principle I'm in favour of play every game to win and 'success breeds success' so cup games are important also !
