stevegrant Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Pardew prefers 4-5-1 hence Rasiak up front to start yesterday? I suspect the 4-5-1 was employed yesterday because of the quality of the opposition. We'd have been torn apart for the whole 90 minutes rather than just the second half if we'd gone with a 4-man midfield, IMO.
Saint Lindford Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 Looked more like 4-1-4-1 to me, certainly in the first half with Wotton sitting just in front of the back 4. Certainly did not work as Rasiak was isolated to easily and so many flick ons were just picked up by Ajax defenders.

Clifford Nelson Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 What was blatant yesterday was how Ajax had time with the ball whilst we were always under pressure so that we were forced into hitting marginal balls up field. As can be expected that doesn't work very well against any good side. If you are to play with a lone striker that one isn't Rasiak. He is a bit of a luxury who will score goals if the team is playing well, but without service it's a bit like playing with 10 men. Saga looked unfit and was outrun at times by centrebacks. He used to be quicker. Lloyd James was surprisingly slow in midfield and expected the ball to come to him rather than to meet it. Needless to say he lost it time and time agains. Did better at right back, but I thought Murty was better. It was nice to see Mills doing well. Simon Gillett is not an offensive midfielder but always comes off with credit for his sheer determination and workrate. He would me my first pick every week together with KD and Perry. I'm over the moon with Pardew who has realised that we are a side badly lacking in confidence which needs to find the "winning habit". He speaks my languish so the man must be a genius. Shame on those who have sent out the side without taking winning their friendlies seriously.

FFS Steve we had a four man midfield completely bypassed, plus a totally inneffective Wotton giving the ball back to the opposition or fouling. He played like an Italian cop on point duty. If Wotton hadn't been there we would have been much better as he stopped the centre backs attacking the ball and disrupted our midfield. Also if we had left out Molyneaux and played a second striker, it would have improved things . A proper wide 4-4-2 would have been much more effective, even with 5 in the middle we were really narrow and allowed Ajax to get down the flanks. Especially as I think Gillet, Davis and Perry are our most important players.
Block 5 Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 We've been playing the lone striker all pre-season. We haven't won in pre-season. We played a lone striker most of last season. We hardly won all last season. Hold on a minute... I see a pattern.....
L1Minus10 Posted 19 July, 2009 Share Posted 19 July, 2009 We haven't got a decent winger at the club. We haven't got a centre forward who can play up on his own. These, I would say, are facts. 3 new players needed at least.

I'm out of patience with this crap, Pardew better get a grip quickly and start walking the walk, we've had too many plonkers just doing the talk in the last few years. It's now either get results or get out. I wouldn't mind betting a lot feel the same way as I do.

Polaroid Saint Posted 20 July, 2009 Share Posted 20 July, 2009 Sorry to say, (or am I?) but Pardew favours a 4-5-1 home and away against most opposition, always has done in the past anyway. at both WHU and Reading. dont know about the valley boys tho. not sure he ever had five midfielders available!
