Ashley Grute Posted 25 August, 2009 Share Posted 25 August, 2009 I slated James for his performance at RB on saturday, but thought he was excellent in CM tonight. I also thought Wotton had his best performance in a saints shirt! Bowyer and Carsley are both decent ex- prem players and we ran the midfield until the Murty injury. Anyone else have the same view? Yes I did It all went pear shaped when Murty went off. Wotton had a great shot as well

SNSUN Posted 25 August, 2009 Share Posted 25 August, 2009 Trouble is, unless we sign a new right back to cover Musty's injury, James is back there. Still, got Hammond.
niceandfriendly Posted 25 August, 2009 Share Posted 25 August, 2009 I can't add much really apart from that I agree that James and Wotton played well tonight.
eurosaint Posted 25 August, 2009 Share Posted 25 August, 2009 Having slated Wotton in the past, I have to say that he did well tonight ! James can play a role in MF as a steady link for other more creative types but i don't like him at RB mainly because of his lack of pace !

James can play a role in MF as a steady link for other more creative types but i don't like him at RB mainly because of his lack of pace ! Agreed that he's not the quickest but don't think that's the problem - Murty isn't quick either but his positional sense, anticipation and reading of the game means he is a very effective RB. Unfortunately, James' lack of experience both in general terms and at playing in a postion which isn't natural for him means that these qualities are just not there. Played very well in his natural CM position tonight and unfortunate both for him and the team that he will probably be shafted in at RB again due to Murty's nasty injury
Rebel Posted 26 August, 2009 Share Posted 26 August, 2009 You would have thought James would have learned a bit about playing at right back after spending the whole of last season there! It seems not however! You are right his lack of pace, positional sense, reading of the game and know-how leave him horribly exposed at right back! He gave the ball away which led to the first goal last night - and played his part in the giving the second away as well. He doesn't mark his man or the space - and often trys to play the ball out when he just needs to hoof it! He's OK at right midfield or central midfield - but he's a goal against waiting to happen at right back. Lets hope we dont destroy him by playing him at right back week in week out - he could be an asset for us at CM/RM - at RB he's a liability. um pahars Posted 26 August, 2009 Share Posted 26 August, 2009 Given the fact that we dominated the game with these two in the middle, then maybe my player ratingsd last night were a tad harsh. On reflection, perhaps they did the simple stuff well that allowed others to play their own game. That said, I don't see these two as a regular pairing in the middle of the park. Just cast your mind back to last season and James improved dramatically towards the end, such everyone felt that position was sorted. Not saying he did not revert to type last night but something I would expect him to sort out and do not see this as an issue.
70's Mike Posted 26 August, 2009 Share Posted 26 August, 2009 Thought James did well in midfield, problem when he is at Right Back is lack of support defensively in front of him. Murty was experienced enough to cope when Mellis did not track Carr , James was not.

I'd like to see Hammond and Gillett in CM personally...
