Gordon Mockles Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 (edited) Just a minor, probably obvious but happy point worth mentioning (apologies if it has been mentioned) which will serve us well this season if we keep scoring so freely from open play... I'm turning into a stato - Other than the 14 goals in the last 5 games there is also another interesting and beneficial element to our campaign... Seeing as Saints started the season (abnormally) on minus 10 points, it's well worth considering that all the goal differences of the teams around us are far inferior (Tranmere on -17, Wycombe on -9, Carlisle -6, Exeter -9). We are on +5 goals difference. Only 5 teams in League One have a better GD than us - Huddersfield and the top 4 teams in the league (Leeds, Charlton, MK Dons & Colchester - Makes you feel good, doesn't it!) So, if we draw level with any teams around the foot of the table (on our climb upwards), we'll automatically leapfrog them (i.e. Tranmere draw Saturday, we win - we're straight past them!) with our positive GD. I think that may come in handy on our rise from the ashes left by our predecessors. Obvious I know but league places & points mean prizes. Just thought I'd share that as it cheered me up. I've not scrutinized tables, stats, points and GD in so long as it used to depress me. Not any more!! YAYY!!! Edited 21 October, 2009 by Gordon Mockles Goal tally wrong - blamed on sh*tty ifooty for printing the Southend result twice, I hadn't noticed! Apologies. So right you are, and if we by way of a very positive momentum stand to sneak in to the last play off place, our positive GD might well be the difference. Wes Tender Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 What was it Oscar Wilde said? We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars... This would be the overpaid but under-performing footballing fraternity you speak of?
shurlock Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 Don't need to crunch any numbers to work that out. If we're level with any team, its most likely that we're going to have a better GD by virtue of having earned an extra 10 points in the course of the season to clear the penalty. Professor Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 Sorry to pour some cold water...........there are actually 6 teams with a better GD than Saints - the original post omitted Millwall on +8. Without the -10, Saints would be equal on points with the 8th and 9th placed teams, but due to an inferior goal difference would only be 10th. On the other hand, after failing to win any of our first 7 games, current form suggests that if we get up to mid-table the GD will be far more positive by then. redorwhitelion Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 Assuming the teams on minus ten points have a reasonable season it effectively becomes -9.5 points thanks to the goal difference.

Thought I'd been so thorough too. I actually saw Millwall (and omitted Norwich who are on the same GD) and then somehow must have gone blind and omitted Millwall in my OP. Still, same point applies. It's good to know that we've an added advantage, despite the -10 to start the campaign. Every cloud...

Not when you get higher up the league as the season goes on.
Whitey Grandad Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 I find that the -10 is misleading so I have decided to apply them pro-rata over the rest of the season. At the moment we have played 13 games so we have a deduction of 2.826 points giving us a net 15.17 points and effectively 14th place, just above Yeovil. However, given our improved form and a settled playing squad I expect that position to steadily improve over the rest of the season. Gordon is quite correct when he says that the GD may turn out to be decisive when we come to the later stages.

Gordon Mockles Posted 21 October, 2009 Author Share Posted 21 October, 2009 It shows what you can do when you massage the figures! Talking of which, not done myself justice on this thread with a few stati errors. I'll never make a statistician! Having counted the goals from our last 5 games on my ifooty application, the useless software printed the Southend result twice (under Fri & Sat) so I accidently added the goals as 15 in our last 5 games when it was in fact 14. Easy mistake to make!! Trust the internet & it lets you down. Pahh!!
