Stepgar Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 (edited) 21 games played so far this season with another 3 games to go before the end of the month. Compared to the Prem - 12 games played in the league so far. I was thinking today how much I actually like being in the lower tiers of football as i get to watch my team even more than before. When there is an international - no break in play and so many midweek games etc. Great! But then i felt on Wednesday we are still playing our full strength side. With only Davis - the only one who does the least amount of running being rested?? Strange. I would have thought it owuld have been much better to give people like Waigo, Sagga etc a start and give the outfield players a rest, those who we depend on the most. Strange. So, after todays performance, do you think that we are getting a little tired and key players could actually do with the rest? Glasgow_Saint Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 We have little backup imo - its become more obvious that now Conolloy and Antonio start we have no plan B and thats a worry. 1st 11 is good (not today) but you need cover and we lack this imo

Give it to Ron Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 But are they rotating their players more wisely than us?? How many had a -10 penalty that needed wiping out before they could start? Sorry they are pro footballers and should be able to handle playing twice a week. We had an extra days rest as well - we were just plainly beaten by a team that wanted it more today.
gaz Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 Some Prem players have played the similar-ish amounts of games, with Champions League, UEFA etc, plus internationals. The teams get less league matches but the players still play somewhere.

I am not just talking about today. And don't use the 10pt penalty as an excuse that has nothing to do with it. It is about the number of games. Yes we did have an extra day, but did Brighton play on Wednesday? I don't think they did. If you go back to the original post we have played 21 games so far against the Prem teams who have played just 12,nearly halve. i completely agree with what you say in regards of being professional sportsmen. But should have to be able to play at the top of their game twice a week? I am not so sure. But this is just my opinion.
Give it to Ron Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 The point about 10 point penalties is that we had to go full tilt at every game with the best available and no chance to rotate. Also the fact that we didnt exactly have the best of squads to start with or at least settled like a number of others. No excuses today just didn't want it enough ...whereas Brighton did. Thedelldays Posted 15 November, 2009 Share Posted 15 November, 2009 it is too many games...thought we looked sluggish at times in the week. I dared to suggest that it would be good to rest lambert etc for the FA cup but got told I was wrong again..

TRUE, but mostly players from the top six clubs - the rest of the Prem. league get a rest, too and those 6 have reserve sides good enough to survive in the lower end of the Prem. beatlesaint Posted 16 November, 2009 Share Posted 16 November, 2009 I know people keep pointing at the JPT and saying "reserve side, reserve side" but dont forget the rule whereby teams have to field at least six of their regulars. Now Connolly played presumably to help him with match fitness, Davis and Trotman were on the bench. Murty is coming back to fitness, Saga was presumably away with Poland so any changes that could have been made to keep the side strong were limited. Lets not forget that had he put out a half and half side people would have used the old "we have blown our best chance to go to Wembley" card. Damned if you do, damned if you dont really. To me, if you want to put out a side that "rests" players then do it in the FA Cup cos we aint gonna win that

With so many Academy lads out on loan it's a good chance for those left " in-between " to get an airing.... (Holmes, Mills, Gobern, Paterson,). Someone has to make some serious decisions about Trotman, Mellis and Antonio - but I would rotate the bench with the likes of Connolly and Wotton and take each game as it comes. Saving a game from 0-2 down is an uphill task against any side - we need fresh legs who can come on and change games when needed.
