saint peach Posted 18 December, 2009 Share Posted 18 December, 2009 As much as I love Papa Waigo he needs to sort out his reading of the opponent's backline. He's quick, got a good touch and can finish but is often undone by his inability to stay onside. I found out today he has been offside 25 times this season in just 610 minutes of football - three times as much as some strikers. If you compare him to Jermaine Beckford, who in my opinion has a similar skill set, it is quite striking (excuse the pun). Beckford has been caught offside, on average, once every 70 minutes but Waigo has been caught every 24 minutes. I hope Pardew can sort the problem out because from what I've seen at Saints and during his time in Italy I think we could have a very good prospect. Andyb1 Posted 18 December, 2009 Share Posted 18 December, 2009 I think this conversation has been done. He wasn't offside much (if at all?) on Tuesday and for his goal he held his run well.
SamKimish Posted 18 December, 2009 Share Posted 18 December, 2009 Looking at stats doesn't tell you how many of those decisions were a case of the linesman not keeping up with play or just sheer stupidity as seen in the Tranmere game where one of their defenders passed to him and he was flagged offside. Exactly. 90 minutes, no offsides and two goals on Tuesday.
niceandfriendly Posted 18 December, 2009 Share Posted 18 December, 2009 I haven't seen him play much recently but before I went away he was flagged offside a few times simply for being too quick for the defenders and the lino got it badly wrong. saint peach Posted 18 December, 2009 Author Share Posted 18 December, 2009 Whatever, it was an interesting fact in my opinion. Glad he scored two goals but this is still major flaw in his game.

Junior Mullet Posted 18 December, 2009 Share Posted 18 December, 2009 Beckford likes to come deeper and pick the ball up whereas Papa is always looking for a well-timed through ball, like the one he got on Tuesday night. Quite agree that the linos have not been sharp enouogh to keep up with him in this division. Seen Papa's finish vs Norwich on the tele a few times now and it gets better and better every time. Shows great pace, strength and awesome composure. Very good player IMO. Has anyone else noticed how many 50/50 balls fall in Papa's favour? He looks so lucky each time he tackles or goes to intercept - but it's not luck at all, more his quick feet.
Dellman Posted 18 December, 2009 Share Posted 18 December, 2009 What's the point of a thread about his offsides when he's just scored twice and wasn't offside once

And, as we all know, football is not about one game, it's about a season.

On the youtube equaliser video knocking about you can see that it is all down to papas positioning and reading of the game. If you dont take your eye off papa right up until the goal you can see that he had it all planned all along and gets into space really well.. ledge.
