SNSUN Posted 8 January, 2010 Share Posted 8 January, 2010 I've often wondered whether bringing the two transfer windows to English football was a small reason as to why we got relegated from the Premiership. After all these years, I'm not still looking for excuses, but surely if the English game hadn't introduced the closure of the window at the end of August, then we could have strengthened the team, especially the defence in our relegation season. I understand the windows were brought in to set us up on a level par with the continental system, but the way it was in the past, we were able to sign players that kept us up. A few spring to mind, Micky Evans, Marian Pahars, Claus Lundekvam, Egil Ostenstadt, Eyal Berkovic, all players that came in during the season that strengthened us up and, ultimately, saved us from relegation in the 90's. This is also highlighted this week with the snow and ice. Effectively a week of the already short January window has gone, with very little chance of signings being completed. Does anyone else think the windows haven't helped us in the past, would you rather see the old system with one deadline day, or do you think the current system provides more excitement at the end of August and January? sussexsaint Posted 8 January, 2010 Share Posted 8 January, 2010 They also protected us from having emerging stars poached the second they had a run of decent games as well though, have to say I tought it was a good idea at the time and often breathed a sigh of relief when the window shut and someof our better players hadn't left - maybe it was just me though
Matthew Le God Posted 8 January, 2010 Share Posted 8 January, 2010 It is the same for every club so why can only Saints claim it cost them? The reason Saints were relegated was lack of investment in playing staff. Also the little money that was spent went on large numbers of average players which bloated the squad rather than a small number of quality players which should have happened after 2003(8th place and cup final). SNSUN Posted 8 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 8 January, 2010 Mr Lowe wasn't it. That's what I thought, it was a Lowe signing. Redknapp was the person to use him in the first team consistantly, but wasn't it because we sold Beatts to Everton?
ringwood Posted 8 January, 2010 Share Posted 8 January, 2010 always thought a player would challenge it as Bosman did as a restraint of trade, not being able to transfer , and very surprised no one has. the other thing I think it has done is drive up prices as panic buy's invariably cost more

YES, the " then" Villa manager (David O'Leary?) didn't rate Crouch and had loaned himout all over the place, before RL signed him ...and I think looking back....that 'appy 'arry wasn't so keen to play him in the beginning, but by the time Jamie had put in his two pennyworth...they'd more or less talked PC into the England team. Before we had the January window there was still a deadline day in March. Just happens that the windows are now smaller but they have been around a long time.
