GeckoSaint Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 Can't help thinking we're playing really well but we're not converting enough of our chances. For all of McGoldrick's hard work & goals I reckon we would have scored more if we'd have someone of Stern's experience & finishing up front. Don't change the system as Lallana just playing off the front man looks good but we just need to find the back of onion bag more often. Step forward Mr John? Scummer Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 I'm guessing that Jan doesn't think Stern moves around enough to play the role he expects of his centre forwards. Either that or his appearance fee is prohibitive.
labibs Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 I really think this our problem. We are far too lightweight up front and are not taking our chances. I'd like to see John or Pekhart start up front tnt, with DMG moved out to the wing.(Maybe out to the left to replace Holmes whilst he is out) I like DMG as a player, he's good on the ball, has good movement and isn't afraid to take people on, but I feel he maybe lacks the physical presence and the killer instinct to play up front on his own. I'd give Pekhart a start tnt, to see what he can do. I expect to see John given a run-out at some point this evening though, maybe as a sub

Saint Martini Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 John or Pekhart upfront with DMG coming from the right and Lallana behind the striker. DMG has played very well on the rightwing although he does need track back a bit more.

DT Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 DMG not up to it. sorry. Can only assume appearance fees are why Stern and Rudi are not playing. we must be amazingly skint.
mprobert Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 Maybe when Jan said on the OS "We will look at what's best for the team. I think we will look at Stern John and Tomas Pekhart for tomorrow because we need a centre forward and we need to make sure we take the chances we create" he had taken a sneaky look at the forum to see what the experts thought he should be doing? SoccerMom Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 I think that the pressures on the squad are such that we'll be seeing most if not all of the senior squad starting in at least one match over the next few weeks.

hughieslastminutegoal Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 I really think this our problem. We are far too lightweight up front and are not taking our chances. This clearly isn't our only problem. Don't you think there is any significance in the fact that KD has shone in every game he's played in - and has pulled of LOTS of excellent saves? Doesn't that tell you the opposition are getting far too many chances?
Saint Mikey Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 A big LOL @ all the conjecture surrounding appearance fees! Skacel is clearly not fit having had no pre-season, he picked up another injury and has played 1 reserve game since then. If / when he is fit, he will get a chance if he's still here that is. As for John, we've only been playing with one striker up front. DMG has been playing better, had been scoring goals. The last 2 games he hasn't looked that good, so I'm sure John will get his chance. It is that simple people, no need to try and find something that isn't there. Think about this, if we couldn't afford to pay these supposed appearance fees, why would we add to the wage bill by making the numerous permanent signings we've made this season? Nope, because they have no pace. James has cost us at least 4 goals so far this season, Surman at least 2.
once_bitterne Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 I think the piece from Jan on the O/S is pretty much stating that it will be Stern John and Perkart up front tonight.
slickmick Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 I think the piece from Jan on the O/S is pretty much stating that it will be Stern John and Perkart up front tonight. Hope so. DMG just isn't good enough, Stern anyday is a better allround player.
GeckoSaint Posted 18 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 18 September, 2008 Stern was disappointing last night, he lacked energy & effort. The complete opposite to Perkart - he put himself around, closed people down & took his chance when it came to him. Stern is gonna struggle to get in the starting line up with Tomas about. Still don't think McGoldrick offers us anything playing out wide.
Chez Posted 19 September, 2008 Share Posted 19 September, 2008 I've never been a fan of John, far too lazy IMO (check out how fast he moves when he has made a balls up and wants to recover the situation and compare that to how fast he moves to create space for others), but I felt a little sorry for him last night, he kept offering himself to feet, but unlike McGoldrick he didn't drop 20 or 30 yards deeper to collect the ball. So every time he offered himself he had a CB up his arse and then never received the pass. He saw so little of the ball its not true. When we did decide to play it to him it was usually a terrible ball at mach 2 and at head height (James especially). I don't see what Stern could have done other than emulate McGoldrick and drop even deeper. Unfortunately that idea means McGoldrick never gets into the box as he should so it has a negative effect. The formation simply does not suit John or he has not adapted quickly enough to it so far.

If you are going to play up front you have to be sharp and a constant threat.
