Season Review 09/10

Thought it could be a good thread just to look at everyones thoughts about how we did, favourite players etc etc. And a good view of how they actually rated this seasons performance and why ?? Like they do in the papers in the school type way. Just want to gauge everyones opinions and hoping that this thread doesn't descend in everyone slating each other opinions.

Let me do mine and you might get what i mean.

My Review - Good first season in league one but could definately do better. The pre season definately did not help us but i think we had a better squad then to go the first 10 games with only 1 win.

Pardew managed to steady the ship and built a team capable of beating any team in the division and looking good going about it, shame he experimented so much with the formation as IMO 4-5-1 was working very well.

Wembley was a fantastic day out and good to see us getting some silverwear however minor it actually is. The final games leading up to the end of the season chasing the playoffs but a dull spell over Xmas probably kept us out of it.

Signings - Very good signings for this league which have built us, on our day as very very good challengers. Rickie and Fonte where obviously inspired and are phenominal. Was disapointed that Pardew did not sign another CM in january perm or after on loan however, we look weak here.

Special mention to Lallana/Schneiderlin that have really raised it this year and have been stood as tall as rickie in the player of the season stakes, IMO.

Overall - B (great attempt, very exciting but could have done better)

It started badly as we had points deducted.

Then we didn't win for ages and it was bad.

Then we won some games and thngs were better.

We climbed out of the relegation zone and that was good.

Then we climbed the table a bit more and that was also good.

We made some signings and spent some money, which was nice and really helped us.

We went on a run.

We did well in the cups, but lost to Portsmouth in the FA cup and Birmingham in the JPT.

We won the Littlewoods cup by beating Carlisle and that was a great day out for the fans.

Some people said that they only went to games to get drunk and dress in football fashion.

Some fans thought that winning the LC meant that we lost out on the play offs. They said that we should have focussed on winning the league games instead of not trying in them.

We missed out on the play off and that upset people, but many people were ok with it.

Some people wrote a letter to Nicola Cortese saying that we shouldn't sack Pardew.

Other people said they didn't mind if Pardew got sacked and that he was only doing an average job.

Overall: Excellent in places and really bad in other places, but when it was really bad there were reasons.

B

Overall B+

A very good effort once we got going but still some room for improvement.

Most importantly for me, I haven't enjoyed my football so much in years. (I've been a supporter for over 40 years). More of the same with a promotion thrown in please.

It's been a strange season with such a feel good factor from having ML buy the club. Obviously expectation for things to move quickly is there but NC is orchestrating a five year plan to get Saints into the Premier League and stay there.

On that basis it is good to see infrastructure being improved, with Les Reed joining to oversee player development - will we get to produce young stars (or be in the first team) from our academy and actually hang on to them?

Also, with the five year plan, it looks like AP is building a decent side with the few players we already had that can cope with promotion next season and challenging in the Championship the following season.

A great day out at wembley with the JPT win.

Grade: B+

Wishes for next season:

3/4 more quality players (RB, CM are essential)

Be able to grind out a result regardless of how bad the ref is against those teams looking to park the bus in front of goal and counter attack.

League One Champions

Average attendance to be above 25k

Season started with most fans hoping to stablise the ship.

Then she started sailing (after some choppy waters)

Then the crew started to wonder whether we couldn't find the new world - forgetting that they started by bailing water.

The new world appeared on the horizon but just disappeared out of a view for while.

The crew dug up some silver on a nearby island.

But despite riches beyond their wildest belief, some still bemoan the lack of a new world.

The sensible ones know the new world is well within sight.

The others should be made to walk the plank....

At the beginning of the season i certainly didnt think that we would reach the playoffs, and would have snapped your hand off if youd have offered 7th place and winning the JPT. 1st seasons are never easy especially with new manager / new squad (of the team that started V carlisle only 2 were at Saints last season) / points deduction and no pre-season. Without -10 would b in the playoffs which would have been an exceptional season taking above into account. Season def been better than i expected

Great season, enjoyed it enormously after the initial period.

What a great judge of a player Pardew is....shrewd free transfers and some players bought. The Huddersfield game was sublime. I bought 2 bottles of beer to celebrate.

can't wait for next season
