kids of today might not realise it, but that Liverpool side 80-85 was arguably the best English club side ever. Just goes to show how well we did in 83/84 season to be 3 points behind them, a few weeks later they beat Roma in Rome in the European Cup final.

Yep. We were something special then.

About a year ago I went to a friend of my wife's birthday party, here in Austria. I was introduced to her father, a big football fan. He asked me where in England I came from. When I told him he got excited and started going on about this Southampton team and how the climax to that season got a lot of attention in Austria because apparently a lot of people were rooting for us to overtake Liverpool.

My own distant recollection is that this wasnt possible and we only sneaked into second place right at the end, so didint really know what he was talking about.

You remember rightly, i was only a kid and it was the first season i was really into football, we did a project on saints at school in the week leading up to the FA cup semi final and strangely i remember alot of that project, the semi final and the closing weeks of the season vividly despite only being 8. I do remember we went on a great run after losing in the FA Cup semi against Everton, remember around that time us losing 0-4 at QPR on the plastic pitch, away to Everton 0-1 in the league then beating them on the wednesday after the semi 3-1 at home, drawing 0-0 at Birmingham which relegated them. The last game was a 3-1 away win at Notts County, remember listening to it on the radio, i think it was a friday night after most other teams had finished their league season which pushed us into second place. Shame really, just that little bit to young to appreciate the team of that time as i only started going regularly a couple of seasons later when Nicholl was in his first season in charge.

England won the World Cup once.

That's rich coming from Mr "remember Lawrie Mac blah blah etc etc blah etc blah".

But then that's you all over - pompous and a hypocrite time and time again. Pompous about "money doesn't win anything" one day, pompous about Cortese not spending enough money on the team the very next day. As long as you can be a smug git about it, you'll change your opinion with the wind.

Pompous today, pompous tomorrow. ****.

Agree, there was no need for SOGGYs stupid sarcastic comment. But then he is no real fan; he goes to less games than me, but he lives in S. England...

Can't you just ignore him though? Or in fact could you ignore each other?

Maybe that way some threads will be saved from descending into petty squabbling that few other people reading this forum are interested in.

I think the most amazing thing about that side (particularly when considering the compliment of 'senior pros') was the movement off the ball, willingness to work for one another, and the sheer enjoyment of playing football for a living. Given the size of the Dell pitch the way that the 80's sides used to zip the ball around was just fantastic...
