Past Generation Players - Today's Transfer Fee

An idea taken from another thread and as someone who grew up in the eighties, watching some great players, I was wondering what they would be worth now?

I missed (By in large) Paine, Davies etc, so will leave those who saw them to comment, but i shudder to think what a Channon or a Williams would be worth in todays market.

Was Williams a Stevie Gerrard..... 30 / 40 million??

What about players like Phil Boyer, Dave Watson, Ivan Golac, Nick Holmes, Charlie George, they'd all be 4 to 5 million surely?

Keegan was the Ronaldo of his generation ....can we say 70 million.

Anyone who scores over 30 goals a season in the top flight is worth a mint so Big Ron would be right up their with the Drogbas. Paine was one of the best wingers of his time so also worth wedge. Channon was priceless. Williams would be top flight too.

From memory Chelsea offered £8m for Le Tiss when Matthew Harding was in charge. In today's money that has to be £30-40m

Still on the other hand, applying that logic would make Dean Richards £25m!

I also seem to remember bids of 10 m (plus Beardsley?) from Newcastle and was it a 15m(?) deal agreed with Spurs pre contracted etc until we stayed up?

Well... Lescott went for £22m.

The one that intrigues me is Dave Armstrong, brilliant engine, vision and able to score 20 goals (headers, tap-ins, and screamers) from midfield. I know that when Shilton (truly world class) joined Saints one of the Sunday papers broke the story that he was the best paid player in Division 1, on an outrageous £1000 per week - says it all really...
