Defending set pieces !

who was the player Adkins was furious with for 3rd goal?

Looking back at the highlights I believe it may be Morgan, seemed to be his man that won the header and he appeared to turn his back a bit and not jump.

To be honest though all of the goals were terrible defending, some work needed on the training ground this week.

We are weak and disorganised when facing set pieces - a prime example being Carlisle's third goal when we had eleven defending but still managed to allow a player a completely free header right in front of goal. Until this weakness is rectified we will continue to let in soft goals. The answer IMO is to sign Jay DeMerit who I think is still a free agent. He may demand a biggish wage but would be worth it as he would dominate the penalty area and organise those around him to do their jobs. He would make a brilliant captain and also probably weigh in with a few goals. If he is indeed still a free agent we could sign him now. This team needs a leader with a big personality who is not shy of handing out a few rollickings on the pitch when things go wrong - right now we have nobody to fill that role and Hammond is a waste of time as skipper as he shirks the responsibilty of providing leadership.

Perhaps he's not comfortable with the system without the 5 metre rope, anyway if we're defending zones Davis has one as well, 10 yards from his goal line. You cannot defend in zones from corners with the keeper rooted to his goal line. It is the ABC of football coaching.

A goalkeeper chained to the goal line allows the ball to be put into the six yd area, If we had a keeper who dominated the area, the ball would have to be hit in further out.

Correct, see people all those with coaching certificates say exactly the same thing. When I'm working with the U15s in my small town team I use a standard zone coaching tactic, roping 4 of them together 5 metres apart. If the keeper doesn't come out well I'll drop him illico because he is weakening the whole system,it leaves a zone uncovered between the goal line and a line about 8 metres out.Obviously if the ball is too high he has to stay back but at head height or a bit above he comes out.Given that the attackers from deep always have the most forward momentum a static keeper is really a big big big problem at set pieces.

All goalies have their good and bad points, this is one of Kelvins bad points. The defenders will set up and react for how they expect the goalie to react. Any goalie who commands his box will make life so much easier for the remaining defenders and there lies the problem with Kelvin. The Huddersfield goal where he believed he was being impeded was marginal and by the time the ball focused the play on him and the forward, there was nothing for the ref to see and Kelvin had boxed himself in. That was really naive of Kelvin and you get the feeling he has an ASBO tag not allowing him to stray from his line during match time. I don't know if Bart would be better, I would like to have seen him in action in the cup, but it will definitely need addressing in the CCC.

So we defend man for man then and not zones. It doesn't matter who's the patsy that gets caught out every time because there will always be one if the keeper is static in a zonal system at set pieces. Keeper has the best vision of the whole picture, if you haven't got eyes in both sides of your head and at the back at well a forward moving defender with momentum will always catch you out in a zonal system. Wouldn't mind betting we have one of the worst records in the football league for goals conceded in this way.
